    • A torque converter is provided for transmitting torque from an engine output shaft to an input shaft of a transmission. The torque converter includes a pump, connected with the engine output shaft, which includes a shell portion disposed at an outer portion thereof, a core portion disposed at an inner portion thereof and a plurality of blades disposed between the shell portion and the core portion. A turbine is disposed facing the pump and is driven by the pump through hydraulic fluid. The turbine includes a shell portion disposed at an outer portion thereof, a core portion disposed at an inner portion thereof and a plurality of blades disposed between the shell portion and the core portion. A stator is disposed between the pump and the turbine for torque amplification. The core portion and blades of the turbine include respective radial outer edges, the core portion and blades of the pump include respective radial outer edges, and the radial outer edges of the blades of at least one of the pump and the turbine project beyond the radial outer edge of the core portion thereof toward the facing blades of the other.

    • A torque converter includes at least two thrust bearings disposed on respective axially-opposite sides of a radially-inward portion of a stator. The stator includes a non-rotatable member, a rotatable member, and a one-way clutch. The rotatable member has a cylindrical portion having an inner peripheral surface interlocked with the one-way clutch, and an extension portion which extends from an approximately axially-central region of the cylindrical portion in a radially-outward direction relative to the cylindrical portion, and has an axial thickness less than that of the cylindrical portion. The thrust bearings are disposed to clamp the extension portion from respective axially-opposite sides of the extension portion at respective positions located radially outwardly relative to the cylindrical portion, so as to facilitate reduction in axial dimension of the torque converter.

    • There is provided a power coupling device comprising first and second coupling members, at least one of which is capable of rotating about a common axis and relative to each other. The first coupling member has a pocket, and the second coupling member has notches. The power coupling member also comprises first and second struts arranged at least partly in the pocket. Each of the first and second struts is urged to emerge from the pocket and capable of engaging with one of the notches. The first strut is capable of transmitting torque between the first and second coupling members only in a first direction, and the second strut is capable of transmitting torque between the first and second coupling members only in a second direction that is opposite to the first direction. The power coupling device further comprises first and second retainer plates arranged between the first and second coupling members capable of moving in a plane perpendicular to the common axis, for example, of rotating about the common axis, and independently from each other. The first retainer plate has a first hole which the first or second strut can pass through. The second retainer plates has a second hole which the first or second strut can pass through when the second hole is aligned with the first hole and the first or second strut. By moving the first and second retainer plates, this power coupling device can achieve the neutral state and the bidirectional lock state in addition to forward and reverse lock states.

    • An automatic transmission is provided comprising a transmission case, a first shaft housed in and rotationally supported by said transmission case, and capable of receiving torque from an engine, a first shifting gear mechanism arranged coaxially with the first shaft, and a second shifting gear mechanism including a second planetary gear set. The automatic transmission further comprises first and second frictional elements arranged at least partly overlapped with the second planetary gear set in the axial direction between the planetary gear set and the transmission case in the radial direction. Accordingly, the plurality of frictional elements may be arranged on a shorter shaft without excessively increasing the radial size of the automatic transmission.
