    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new functional metal complex element not only reversibly changing the structure by external stimulation such as heat and light but also having a space for securing free motion of each molecule; and to provide a new functional molecular element material obtained by immobilizing the metal complex element on a substrate, reversibly responding to the external stimulation such as the heat and the light, and having individual molecular ability capable of being optionally utilized and regulated.
      SOLUTION: The external stimulation-responsible reversible molecule is the functional metal complex molecule represented by general formula (II) vertically immobilized by the center metal of a planar metal complex molecule represented by general formula (I) by a coordinate bond. (In the formulas, M is a transition metal ion; L is a planar polydentate ligand; R is a substituent containing a hydrocarbon group; A is a substituent capable of being reversibly converted to B by responding to the optional external stimulation; X is a substituent forming coordination linkage; and R is a substituent containing a hydrocarbon group).
