    • The invention provided a gas generator for an air bag having any of the following members. A deflecting member is provided to suppress discharge of a combustion product generated by a combustion of gas generating means, and is formed as a tube portion to be capable of shielding a gas discharge port formed at least on a circumferential wall of a housing from the inside of the housing. A coolant/filter means supporting member can position a coolant/filter means, prevent a short pass of an operating gas, and functions as a buffer member between the coolant/filter and the housing, and/or prevent a heat from being transferred to a diffuser shell, and comprises an annular portion arranged to face an end surface of the housing and a wall portion contacting with an inner periphery of the coolant/filter means. Further, in order to make it possible to securely support and fix the coolant means and prevent the short pass of the operating gas, an outer peripheral edge of an end portion thereof is adhered and/or supported to a bent portion or a step portion formed in an inner surface of an upper end surface and/or an inner surface of a lower end portion in the housing. The coolant/filter means is formed in a cylindrical shape obtained by laminating a wire mesh. The housing for the gas generator securely fixes an igniter included in an ignition means, is preferably used at a time of manufacturing a gas generator having a restricted overall height, and has an opening portion for inserting and fixing the igniter or an igniter supporting member. The opening portion is provided with a connecting portion for fixing the inserted igniter or igniter supporting member, and the connecting portion is provided in inner side of the housing rather than the end surface having the opening portion.

    • When a gas generating agent 9a inside a first combustion chamber 5a is burnt, a gas generating agent 9b is prevented from being burnt by function of a metal thin plate 11 closing a communication hole 10 with a second combustion chamber 5b. A cup 1190 having a hole 1191 is covered on an igniter 1112, and the flame thereof advances into a transfer charge 1116 straightly in a narrow width. Accordingly, since the transfer charge 1116 is burnt completely, sufficient flame for burning a gas generating agent 1109 can be generated securely. A communication hole 3010 between a first combustion chamber 3005a and a second combustion chamber 3005b is closed by double-layered seal tape 3011 laminated through an adhesive layer. After activation, the seal tapes 3011 are not ruptured due to increase in the internal pressure of the first combustion chamber 3005a, but they are peeled off easily due to increase in the internal pressure of the second combustion chamber 3005b.

    • The present invention is a small, light-weight gas generator for a passenger air bag. The gas generator includes a housing having a diffuser shell and a closure shell. The diffuser shell includes a round portion, a center cylindrical portion extending concentrically from inside a peripheral portion of the round portion, and an inner cylindrical portion. The center cylindrical portion is disposed at the center of the round portion for storing therein a squib-enhancer. The inner cylindrical portion is disposed outside the center cylindrical portion to provide a combustion chamber. The closure shell includes an annular portion equipped with a center hole for receiving the center cylindrical portion, and a peripheral wall portion extending from the peripheral portion of the annular portion to the peripheral portion of the round portion of the diffuser shell. This peripheral wall portion defines a coolant-filter chamber and includes a gas discharge port and a flange portion extending in a radial direction. Welding bonds the closure and diffuser shells together at the outer peripheral portion of the center cylindrical portion and the peripheral portion of the center hole; at the tip of the inner cylindrical portion and the region of the annular portion coming into contact with the tip; and at the peripheral portion of the round portion and the tip portion of the peripheral wall portion.

The gas generator includes a housing having a diffuser shell and a closure shell. The diffuser shell includes a round portion, a cylindrical portion extending concentrically from the round portion and an inner cylindrical portion extending about the center cylindrical portion and extending from the round portion. The closure shell includes an annular portion having a center hole for receiving the center cylindrical portion and a peripheral wall portion extending from the peripheral portion of the annular portion. This peripheral wall portion extends to the peripheral portion of the round portion of the diffuser. Electron beam welding may be used to bond the closure and diffuser shells together at the outer peripheral portion of the center cylindrical portion and the center hole; the inner cylindrical portion and the annular portion; and the peripheral portion of the round portion and the inner surface of the peripheral wall.
