    • A valve drive (1) for a cam-operated valve (2) of an internal combustion engine is provided, in which a closing force is applied to the valve (2) against the opening direction of the valve (2) by a valve spring (3). The valve drive includes a hydraulic force application device (4), with which a force can be applied directly or indirectly against the direction of the closing force onto the valve (2), and includes a piston (5) that is moveable in a displacement direction (R) relative to a cylinder (6) of the force application device (4) by the introduction of hydraulic fluid into the pressure chamber (7) formed between the piston (5) and the cylinder (6). The piston (5) can move relative to the cylinder (6) from a first end position (A) into a second end position (B). In order to achieve improved damping of the piston in the region of the end positions, a braking or damping system (8, 9) is provided with which the movement of the piston (5) can be braked relative to the cylinder (6) when a predetermined relative position between the piston (5) and cylinder (6) is reached and until one of the end positions (A, B) is reached.

    • A pyrometer for measuring the electromagnetic radiation emitted by an object comprises a first detector to which the radiation is delivered through an optical system as well as a second detector to which the radiation emanating from a reference element is delivered through the same optical system. The temperature of the reference element is monitored and a rotary optical modulator periodically enables and disables the delivery of radiation to the detectors. The output signals from the two detectors are processed to determine the difference therebetween. The sensed temperature of the reference element is taken into account as a part of determining the difference between the two detector output signals. In this way it is possible for the characteristic radiation of the optical system largely to be suppressed. The optical modulator comprises a semi-circular disk having a polyethylene terephthalate substrate coated on each side with metal. The disk is rotated through 180.degree. increments by a stepping motor such that, in one angular position, the disk permits reception by the two detectors of radiation from the optical system and, in the other angular position, the disk prevents reception by the detectors of radiation from the optical system.

    • A strip of material is advanced a first selected distance along a feed path past a cutter. Then, the free end of the strip of material is gripped by a gripper and pulled a second selected distance so that the strip of material is disposed across a path of a reciprocating frame. The frame is advanced so that a retainer holds the portion of the strip of material to be cut at the time that it is cut by the cutter. The ends of the cut segment, which is held by the retainer, are folded by two pairs of folding pins supported by the frame to form a folded loop. The folded loop is advanced to a sewing machine, when a sewing machine operator activates a switch, to position the folded loop on a sewing plate with the frame being retracted after the folded loop is clamped to the sewing plate and prior to sewing. The movements of the frame and the gripper are controlled from a single driven cam shaft having three cams thereon with one having a plurality of cam profiles. If the strip of material exceeds a predetermined thickness, the frame is prevented from being advanced to the position in which the retainer holds the portion of the strip of material to be cut prior to cutting so that the cut segment is not used as a folded loop.
