    • Disclosed are various embodiments of a capacitive touchscreen or touch panel system comprising a controller operably connected to a first plurality of drive electrodes and a second plurality of sense electrodes. The controller includes a noise disruption detector circuit, a user noise source detector/anticipator circuit, clock control logic circuitry operably connected to the noise disruption detector circuit and to the user noise source detector/anticipator circuit, at least one static-clocked digital filter circuit operably connected to and controlled by the clock control logic circuitry, a central processing unit (CPU) operably connected to the clock control logic circuitry, firmware operably connected to the CPU; and touch position circuitry configured to deliver signals indicative of touch positions on the touchscreen to a host controller. The controller is configured to employ at least one of the CPU and the firmware to cause the clock control logic circuitry to inhibit operation of the digital filter circuit in response to a signal representative of excessive noise levels being provided by either the noise disruption detector circuit or the user noise source detector/anticipator circuit.

    • An apparatus for optical navigation. The apparatus has a surface comprising an aperture, wherein the surface is configured to be moveable against an illuminated surface having a detectable texture. An optical motion detection circuit is integral to the apparatus and optically coupled to the detectable texture of the display screen. The optical motion detection circuit produces motion signals indicative of motion of the surface relative to the detectable texture of the illuminated surface, wherein the optical motion detection circuit is operable to detect the detectable texture without requiring an integral illumination source.

    • An apparatus and method for integrating an optical navigation mechanism with non-optical sensor are described. At least one optical sensor is provided that detects light and converts the detected light into a corresponding electric signal. An optical navigation mechanism that employs the output of the optical sensor to provide user-controllable cursor navigation is also included. The optical navigation mechanism has a power saving state and an operation state. A non-optical sensor is provided that detects the presence or absence of an object in the vicinity of the non-optical sensor and selectively generates a present signal. A power saving mechanism is coupled to the non-optical sensor and receives the present signal and responsive thereto causes the optical navigation mechanism to transition from the power saving state to the operation state or from the operation state to a power saving state.
