    • The present invention aims to provide a magnetic recording medium capable of high-density recording with excellent running durability and preservability as well as a magnetic recording medium capable of high-density recording with low noise even at high output and excellent running durability. Disclosed are a magnetic recording medium comprises a magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder and a binder provided on a nonmagnetic flexible substrate and a magnetic recording medium comprising a nonmagnetic layer containing a nonmagnetic powder and a binder and a magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder and a binder provided in this order on a nonmagnetic flexible substrate. Provided that said magnetic layer contains a zirconia powder having an average primary particle diameter of 0.005-0.2 &mgr;m, or said magnetic layer has an average thickness in the range of 0.04-0.3 &mgr;m, said ferromagnetic powder is a metal alloy powder having a as of 130 A.m2/kg or more, and said magnetic layer contains a granulated powder having an average primary particle diameter of 0.005-0.2 &mgr;m and a specific gravity of 5 or more.

    • A magnetic recording medium includes at least one magnetic layer formed by dispersing a ferromagnetic powder in a binder, the ferromagnetic powder including at least one kind of rare earth metal element selected from Y or metal elements of lanthanide series and being constituted of acicular ferromagnetic alloy powder particles whose .sigma. s is in the range of 120 to 160 emu/g, whose average longitudinal axis length is in the range of 0.04 to 0.2 .mu.m and whose crystallite size is in the range of 100 to 300 angstroms, the magnetic layer including an abrasive agent whose average particle diameter is in the range of 0.03 to 0.3 .mu.m and containing carbon black having an average particle diameter of 50 to 300 m.mu.. The magnetic recording medium has an excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics and, particularly, a good preservation capability and can prevent a magnetic head from being abraded.

    • In the method for producing a magnetic recording medium having a nonmagnetic substrate coated with a magnetic coating material containing a ferromagnetic powder and a binder, the magnetic coating material contains a liquid A constituted by the ferromagnetic powder and a solvent, and a solution B of the binder, and the liquid A and the solution B are mixed together by a thin-layer revolving-type fast stirring apparatus, and are thereafter subjected to dispersion processing. Thereby, coagulated particles of the ferromagnetic powder can be dispersed and the coagulation of the ferromagnetic powder can be prevented, thus making it possible to obtain a liquid of ferromagnetic powder with uniform adsorption of the binder. As a result, a magnetic coating material suitable for a low-noise high-density coating-type magnetic recording medium is obtained.
