    • An endoscopic infusion needle device includes a catheter within which an injection tube having a distal injection needle is slideably disposed. A proximal actuating handle is coupled to the proximal ends of the catheter and the injection tube, and a distal stopping structure is provided on distal portions of the catheter and the injection tube. In one embodiment, the stopping structures include a rigid elongate skeletal structure occupying a portion of the annular space between the tube and the catheter, and an annular band on the tube which resides within the skeletal structure. The skeletal structure fits tightly within the cannula, allows irrigation fluid to pass through the annular space between the tube and the catheter to exit the distal end of the catheter, prevents the annular band from escaping through the proximal end or the distal end of the skeletal structure, and maintains the tube in substantial axial alignment with the catheter. The annular band is located such that when the tube is moved proximally, the distal end of the injection needle is safely housed within the skeletal structure when the annular band is stopped by the skeletal structure; and, when the tube is moved distally, the distal end of the needle extends approximately 4-6 mm beyond the distal end of the skeletal structure when the annular band is stopped by the skeletal structure.

    • A force-limiting control member for an endoscopic instrument is a flexible wire having a proximal and a distal end, wherein a portion of the wire is bent into a sinusoidal or coiled shape to form a spring portion of the control member. An endoscopic instrument incorporating the force-limiting control member includes a flexible coil having a proximal and a distal end, a pair of forceps jaws mounted for rotation on a clevis which is coupled to the distal end of the coil, and a proximal handle coupled to the proximal end of the coil. The proximal handle has a spring biased lever coupled to it in a manner which limits the throw of the lever to a preselected distance. The force-limiting control member extends through the coil and is coupled at its distal end to the forceps jaws and at its proximal end to the actuating member. The spring portion of the control member which preferably resides inside the handle and is free to expand as the actuating member is moved from its spring biased first position to its throw limited second position. The spring portion of the control member is formed to have a spring constant such that when the actuation member is in its second throw limited position, the spring portion is expanded to a length which causes it to exert a predetermined force without exceeding its elastic limit. This is advantageously accomplished by pre-stressing the spring.

    • A Veress needle and cannula assembly includes a stainless steel cannula assembly with a cannula having an outer diameter of approximately 4 mm and a Veress needle assembly having a Veress needle with an outer diameter of approximately 3 mm. The cannula assembly includes a proximal valve assembly and the Veress needle is insertable through the valve assembly. Where the cannula and Veress needle are not closely fitted, a molded transition collar on the Veress needle seals the annular space between the interior of the cannula and the exterior of the Veress needle and is provided with sharp distal edges for aiding insertion of the cannula assembly into the body of a patient. The cannula valve assembly preferably includes a female luer lock connector. The Veress needle preferably includes a handle with a rotatable male luer lock coupler which engages the female luer lock connector on the cannula valve assembly when the Veress needle is inserted into the cannula assembly.

    • A coaxial bone marrow biopsy needle assembly is disclosed. The assembly includes a hollow cannula with a handle having an interlocking device and a trocar insertable in the cannula and having a second handle with another interlocking device which mates with the interlocking device in the cannula handle. The interlocking devices are a spring biased pin radially entering a receiving socket, and a notched projection which extends into the receiving socket. The pin has a ramped portion, and the notched projection has a rounded or conical tip which rides down the ramped portion of the pin and thereby pushes the biased pin radially out of the socket during assembly of the hollow cannula with the trocar. The assembled handles provides a smooth upper surface which fits comfortably in a palm and a lower gripping surface around which fingers easily wrap. The interlocking devices hold the handles securely together keeping the trocar within the cannula during puncture, but are easily separated thereafter.

    • A thoracentesis sheath catheter assembly includes a catheter connected to a valve body. The valve body is provided with a throughbore coaxial to the catheter for receiving a thoracentesis needle therethrough and a drainage bore in fluid communication with the first throughbore. The valve body is constructed as a first cylindrical portion which is connected to the catheter and a second cylindrical portion of larger inner diameter which is joined to the first cylindrical portion by a tapered inner wall. The second cylindrical portion contains a valve comprising a blocking ball and a spring biased plunger having a throughbore coaxial to the catheter, and is closed with a cap having a central hole and/or a gasket for sealingly receiving the thoracentesis needle. A thoracentesis needle extends through the hole of the cap, the gasket, the plunger, the first cylindrical portion and into and through the catheter. With the thoracentesis needle in place, communication between the throughbore and the drainage bore is blocked and a flow path is established through the needle. When the needle is removed, the throughbore is automatically obstructed by movement of the ball by the plunger along the tapered inner wall. However, a second fluid path is automatically established from the throughbore to the drainage bore.

    • A bone marrow biopsy needle assembly for obtaining a bone marrow core biopsy and a bone marrow aspirate biopsy in a single procedure includes an outer aspiration sheath which closely surrounds a coaxial inner hollow coring needle, and a trocar which extends through the coring needle. A handle arrangement is provided to allow insertion into the bone of the central trocar, the core biopsy needle and the outer aspiration sheath as an assembly, and to further allow stable manipulation of each component of the system without displacing the outer aspiration sheath. After insertion of the combined system through the cortical bone layer, the trocar is withdrawn. Further pushing and, if desired, twisting of the remaining assembly forces a bone marrow core biopsy into the inner, coring needle. The coring needle is then withdrawn and the bone marrow core biopsy is pushed out in a retrograde manner. An aspiration syringe is then coupled to a luer slip on the aspiration sheath handle, and a liquid sample of marrow aspirate is obtained. Thus, a solid core of bone marrow and liquid marrow aspirate are obtained through a single entry into bone, thereby minimizing bone trauma and patient discomfort.
