    • An apparatus (30) is disclosed for effective drying of material, such as vegetables, by centrifugal force. The apparatus (30) includes a series of conveyor assemblies (52-58) distributed on a rotating shaft (34). A gear ring (76) can be held stationary while the shaft rotates to move conveyor belts (70) within the apparatus to simultaneously load material to be dried while dried material is removed from the other end of the apparatus. When the conveyor belts are loaded, the shaft and conveyor assemblies can be rotated at a higher rotational velocity to dry the materials for a predetermined period of time.

    • A method for dedusting synthetic oil is disclosed. A feed of dust-laden synthetic oil is dissolved in a non-polar solvent of at least one alkane containing from 4 to 7 carbon atoms and aggregates of dust material are formed. The dissolved dust-laden synthetic oil is then gravitationally separated into a substantially dedusted stream in a dust-enriched stream including aggregates formed in the dissolution step. The dissolution and gravitational separation steps are conducted at a temperature and pressure greater than about 150.degree. F. and about ambient pressure and less than about the critical point temperature and pressure of the solvent and the aggregates provide acceptable settling and sludge compression rates. Methods for producing and dedusting oil from synthetic fuel stock are also disclosed.

    • A safe deposit-type lock assembly having a fabricated metal cover plate and interchangeable lock noses or insert guides to provide the desired combination of big and little noses. The noses are cast metal provided with a universal size base having locking elements for engaging the cover plate. The locking elements include bayonet-type wings engaging the top surface of the cover plate and locking wedges engaging beneath resilient retainer arms stamped from the cover plate. A locking detent is provided between the retainer arms and the mating locking wedges. The safe deposit door is positioned flush on top of the retainer arms and wings to assure engagement of the detent once the lock is positioned on the back of the door. The heads of the lock plugs are received in the noses providing the desired match for previously installed boxes.

    • A process is provided for obtaining spectral information and quantifying the physical properties of a sample. The process comprises launching polychromatic light having a wavelength ranging from about 100 nanometers to about 2500 nanometers alternately through at least one sample channel and at least one reference channel, through at least one high-efficiency fiber optic switch. The sample and the polychromatic light along the sample channel are directed to a sample cell wherein the polychromatic light is passed through the sample, producing sample spectral information. The polychromatic light directed along the reference channel produces reference spectral information. The sample and reference spectral information is reproducibly and uniformly imaged by passing or conveying said sample and reference spectral information through a mode scrambler and the uniformly imaged sample and reference spectral information is then processed in a wavelength discrimination device wherein the uniformly imaged spectral information is separated into component wavelengths and the light intensity at each wavelength determined and recorded. A chemometric model and the separated and recorded uniformly imaged sample and reference spectral information are then utilized to predict the physical properties of the sample. The process of the present invention provides improved prediction accuracy, increased reliability, lower operating costs, and is easier to use and calibrate.

    • A process and system is provided to produce and dedust oil from oil shale and other types of solid hydrocarbon-containing material. In the process, raw oil shale is retorted, preferably with solid heat carrier material, to liberate an effluent product stream of hydrocarbons containing entrained particulates of dust derived from the oil shale or other solid hydrocarbon-containing material. A fraction of oil containing most of the dust is separated from the effluent product stream and fed to one or more dedusters. The dust-laden oil is dissolved in a special mixture of dedusting solvents which contains both polar and non-polar dedusting solvents. In the deduster, the dissolved oil is separated into a dedusted stream of oil and solvents and a residual stream of dust-laden sludge. Solvents are recovered from the dedusted stream as well as the sludge. The recovered solvents are recycled to the deduster for use in dedusting the oil. The sludge is preferably dried and combusted for use as part of the solid heat carrier material in the retort.
