    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To give time allowance for dealing with am avoiding operation and the like a driver by stopping the operation control of an actuator when an object selected as a specified object does not have the lateral width of not less than a prescribed value. SOLUTION: A part of a preceding vehicle is hidden in a state where a part of a four-wheel vehicle 18 which is difficult to be detected by an object detection sensor is interrupted between a self-vehicle 16 while it travels a straight road and a preceding vehicle 17 decided as a target, a state where the compact car of a two-wheel vehicle which is difficult to be detected by the object detection sensor is interrupted between the self-vehicle 16 and the preceding vehicle 17 decided as the target and a state where the four-wheel vehicle which is difficult to be detected by the object detection sensor is interrupted on the same turn track between the self-vehicle 16 during turn travel at a corner and the preceding vehicle 17 decided as the target, the preceding vehicle 17 being the target is judged that it does not have the lateral width of not less than the prescribed value W. It is judged that the object which is difficult to be detected by the object sensor exists. Then, the operation control of both actuators is stopped.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely determine an abnormality of detection in the case where detecting condition of the same object is intermittently continued with a non-detecting condition interposed between the detecting conditions by comparing the received quantity of light before detecting the non-detecting condition and the received quantity of light in the detecting condition after the non-detecting condition is passed with a threshold value. SOLUTION: A distance sensor for vehicle computes a distance from an object in front of a vehicle to the own vehicle. At the time of measuring distance, there is a case where a distance to a preceding vehicle cannot be accurately detected due to stains on the rear part of the preceding vehicle as an object and due to the lowering of the quantity of the reflected light from the preceding vehicle during the traveling. In the case where the same object detecting condition is intermittently continued with a non-detecting condition interposed between the detecting condition, and in the case where the received light variable just before losing the preceding vehicle and the light received variable at the time of new detection after passing the non-detecting condition are equal to a preset threshold value or less, abnormality of detection is determined. A determination that the preceding vehicle is hard to be detected is securely performed. When abnormality of detection is determined, an informing device is operated so as to inform the hard detecting condition to a vehicle driver.
