    • PURPOSE: To suppress the overvoltage of a power converter at the current interrupting or conducting time by providing a voltage absorber connected in series with a capacitive element and an inductive element at the side of a power source when power converting by switching means having a current interrupting function.
      CONSTITUTION: A converter COM in which a GTO, UGTO, VGTO, WGTO and thyristors U2, V2, W2 are connected to a full-wave bridge circuit is connected to a 3-phase power source Ea, and power is supplied to a load L such as a DC motor. A voltage absorber VA in which a capacitor CF and a reactance LF are connected in series is connected between power lines near the anodes of the GTOs. Therefore, a circulating current 2 is suppressed by the overvoltage at the load side at the current interrupting time, the overvoltage is effectively absorbed by the capacitor CF at the interrupting time at the power source side and by the reactance LF at the conducting time after the interruption, thereby avoiding the increase in the capacity of the converter COM.
