    • A method and system provide a magnetic transducer that includes an air-bearing surface (ABS). The magnetic transducer includes an underlayer and a main pole residing on the underlayer. The main pole includes a front and a rear. The front resides at the ABS, while the rear is distal from the ABS. The main pole also includes a first portion having a first magnetic moment and a second portion having a second magnetic moment. The first portion has a front face at the ABS and terminates between the ABS and the rear of the main pole. A part of the second portion resides on the first portion, while another part of the second portion resides between the first portion of the main pole and the rear of the main pole. The first magnetic moment is less than the second magnetic moment.

    • A method for fabricating a magnetic transducer having an air-bearing surface (ABS) is provided. The method comprises providing an underlayer, and providing a main pole residing on the underlayer and having a front and a rear. The step of providing a main pole further includes providing a first portion having a first magnetic moment, the first portion having a front face at the ABS and terminating between the ABS and the rear of the main pole, and providing a second portion having a second magnetic moment. A part of the second portion resides on the first portion, and another part of the second portion resides between the first portion of the main pole and the rear of the main pole. The first magnetic moment is less than the second magnetic moment.

In one case, the system includes a pole having a leading edge and trailing edge, a leading shield positioned closer to the leading edge than the trailing edge, the leading shield having a leading shield moment, a trailing shield positioned closer to the trailing edge than the leading edge, the trailing shield having a trailing shield moment greater than the leading shield moment, and a side shield positioned along side of the pole, the side shield including a gradient magnetic moment progressing from a first side shield moment to a second side shield moment, where the first side shield moment is about equal to the leading shield moment, and where the second side shield moment is about equal to the trailing shield moment and positioned closer to the trailing shield than the leading shield.

    • A perpendicular magnetic recording head for use in a hard disk drive has a main pole that has a main pole tip in proximity to an air bearing surface. The main pole tip has a first width at the ABS, extending distally at a first angle measured from the plane of the ABS to a second width measured at a first distance from the ABS. The main pole tip extends distally at a second angle measured from the plane of the ABS from the second width to a third width, wherein the second angle is less than the first angle. The main pole tip extends distally at a third angle measured from the plane of the ABS from the third width to a fourth width, wherein the third angle is greater than the second angle. The first distance is between 25 and 100 nanometers.
