    • A base station (40-s) is configured to serve a wireless device (36) in a serving cell (42-s) on a serving frequency. The base station (40-s) obtains information that indicates one or more non-serving frequencies on which the device (36) is to perform one or more positioning measurements. These positioning measurements are to be used for determining the device's geographic position. For at least one non-serving frequency indicated by the information, the base station (40-s) configures a measurement gap during which the device (36) is to perform a corresponding positioning measurement. Specifically, the base station (40-s) configures such measurement gap to occur during a period of time in which a neighboring eel! (42-1, 42-2) transmits a positioning reference signal over that non -serving frequency. A positioning reference signal is specifically designed to be a signal on which a device performs positioning measurements. Thus, by aligning the measurement gap with a positioning reference signal, the positioning measurements will prove more reliable and accurate.

    • Methods and devices are provided whereby scrambling codes can be set in an improved way. In accordance with one embodiment a method is provided in a User Equipment for generating a second scrambling code or a second scrambling code group. The UE is configured for multi carrier operation receiving downlink transmission from a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System Terrestrial Radio Access Network on a set of at least two downlink carriers including an anchor carrier and at least a first secondary carrier. The method comprises determining a first scrambling code or a first scrambling code group associated with a first cell on the anchor carrier; and deriving a second scrambling code or a second scrambling code group associated with a second cell on said first secondary carrier using a predefined rule defining the relation between the second scrambling code or second scrambling code group and the first scrambling code or scrambling code group. Hereby interference suppression / cancellation processing is enabled in a receiver of a UE on secondary cells in multi-carrier scenarios that do not transmit the SCH, while minimizing the need for overhead in terms of signaling of the scrambling codes for neighbouring cells in a UTRAN system. Methods and devices for E-UTRAN are also described.

    • The teachings presented herein enable a user terminal to perform a fast recovery from a radio link failure. In one aspect, the improvement in recovery time is achieved by commanding or otherwise causing the user terminal to perform radio link failure (RLF) recovery at a cell that is known to possess the user context, while considering that this cell should yield good radio conditions (if not the best) to the user terminal. A cell may be predefined for use by the user terminal in recovering its radio connection. Based on providing signal strength thresholds to the user terminal, for use in determining whether to use a predefined cell for reconnecting to the network, the user terminal attempts RLF recovery first in the predefined cell. By providing user context to the predefined cell in advance of a recovery attempt by the user terminal, the time for recovery is lessened. Note that the user terminal also may infer which cells are preferred.

The detected operating mode of the network part of the mobile communications system is used for controlling subsequent operation of the user equipment.
