    • Methods and apparatus allowing a choice of Least Frequently Used (LFU) or Most Frequently Used (MFU) cache line replacement are disclosed. The methods and apparatus determine new state information for at least two given cache lines of a number of cache lines in a cache, the new state information based at least in part on prior state information for the at least two given cache lines. Additionally, when an access miss occurs in one of the at least two given lines, the methods and apparatus (1) select either LFU or MFU replacement criteria, and (2) replace one of the at least two given cache lines based on the new state information and the selected replacement criteria. Additionally, a cache for replacing MFU cache lines is disclosed. The cache additionally comprises MFU circuitry (1) adapted to produce new state information for the at least two given cache lines in response to an access to one of the at least two given cache lines, and (2) when a cache miss occurs in one of the at least two given cache lines, adapted to determine, based on the new state information, which of the at least two given cache lines is the most frequently used cache line.

    • Methods, systems and computer program products are provided for refining constellation values in a Pulse Code Modulated (PCM) code point sequence of a PCM modem by averaging received levels associated with received symbols for a code point of interest received during data mode operation of the PCM modem so as to provide an average received level for the code point of interest and revising a constellation value corresponding to the code point of interest in the PCM code sequence based on the average received level for the code point of interest so as to provide a refined constellation value. Preferably, the averaging is performed by detecting that a symbol corresponding to the code point of interest has been received by the PCM modem and incorporating the received level of the symbol into a running sum of previously received levels for the symbol. If a predefined number of received levels have been incorporated into the running sum then the running sum is divided by the predefined number of receive levels. It is also preferred that, after determining the sum for the code point of interest, the running sum is set to zero and a new code point selected as the code point of interest.

    • Modems, methods, and computer program products for recovering from errors during a tone reversal sequence between a modem pair detect a false tone reversal during a tone reversal sequence at a first modem. If a false tone reversal is detected, then the first modem requests that a second modem restart the tone reversal sequence. Tone reversal sequences are used, for example, in the startup protocols of both the V.34 and V.90 standards to calculate the round trip delay between two modems. Neither standard provides for any recovery procedure, however, should the tone reversal sequence fail. The modems, methods, and computer program products can allow errors in a tone reversal sequence to be addressed immediately rather than proceeding to later phases in the communication protocol where the errors may ultimately cause the communication session to breakdown.
