    • The device for switching electric current comprises a compressed gas switch, at least one vacuum switch (14) and two terminals (2, 3). In this switching device, a first consumable contact (10) of the compressed gas switch is electrically connected to a fixed electrode (15) of the vacuum switch (14), a second consumable contact (7) of the compressed gas switch is connected to a first (2) of the two terminals (2, 3) and a movable electrode (16) of the vacuum switch (14) is connected to a second (3) of the two terminals (2, 3) to form a quenching circuit. The two electrodes (15, 16) of the vacuum switch (14) can be separated without the use of the drive (5) and a contact pressure is applied to them which prevents the electrodes (15, 16) from breaking below a threshold value of the current to be switched off. On switch-off, the current to be interrupted is switched over from a rated current circuit containing two rated current contacts (8, 11) of the compressed gas switch to the parallel quenching circuit. The vacuum switch (14) now in the quenching circuit breaks only if the current to be switched off exceeds the aforementioned threshold. As the vacuum switch (14) does not conduct the rated current and, unlike the compressed gas switch, is involved only in a few break operations, it can be of substantially lighter construction than a vacuum switch carrying the rated current and is actuated in every switching operation.

    • A high voltage circuit breaker (1) comprising an interruption chamber (2) being filled with an extinguishing agent, wherein said interruption chamber (2) comprises at least two separable arcing contact pieces (12, 13) that are coaxially arranged and an arcing zone (10) in which an electric arc (14) is producible during an interruption process. Said interruption chamber (2) comprises further at least two inlets (15a, 15b) and at least one outlet (20a) located in between two inlets (15a, 15b). The inlets (15a, 15b) and the at least one outlet (20a) are fluidly connected with said arcing zone (10) such that the electric arc (14) is extinguishable in at least three arc interruption zones by means of extinguishing flows (25, 25a, 25b) streaming out of the at least two inlets (15a, 15b) into the arcing zone (10) upon pressurization and introduction of a portion of the extinguishing agent in said arcing zone (10) and leading an amount of said extinguishing flows (25, 25a, 25b) through said outlet out of the arcing zone (10).
