    • An electric discharge lamp apparatus incorporates: a metal lead support 36 which projects over the front surface of an insulating plug 30 made of synthetic resin, which supports the leading end of an arc tube 10 and which serves as a passage for electric power arranged to be supplied to the arc tube 10; and an insulating sleeve 38 which is made of ceramics formed into a pipe shape and through which the lead support 36 is inserted, wherein a predetermined gap S2 is provided between the insulating sleeve 38 and the lead support 36. Thus, insertion of the lead support 36 into the insulating sleeve 38 can easily be performed, and a dimension error of the insulating sleeve 38 can be absorbed. Since a bent portions 36a is provided for a portion of the lead support 36 into which the insulating sleeve is inserted, the insulating sleeve 38 and the lead support 36 can hermetically integrated with each other. Thus, rattle of the insulating sleeve 38 with respect to the lead support 36 can be prevented.

    • In a mercury free arc tube provided with a sealed glass chamber in which at least metallic halide for main light emission is sealed as well as rare gas by pinch-sealing both end openings of a glass tube and electrode bars are opposite to each other, the tip of a region projecting into the sealed glass chamber of each the electrode bars is formed of a single crystal. Owing to repetition of ON/OFF of the arc tube, the crystal at the tip of the electrode bar grows but the shape of the electrode end face formed of the single crystal remains unchanged. Further, even if the tip of the electrode bar is gradually consumed by thermal load acting on the tip of the electrode bar, the entire shape of the electrode end face is consumed nearly uniformly so that decline of the luminescent spot does not occur during discharging.

    • An arc tube for a discharge lamp has a closed chamber filled with rare gas and a metal halide containing at least Na halide or Sc halide, and electrodes, wherein sealing pressure of the rare gas is 0.6 MPa or more, and a sealing density of the Sc halide in the closed chamber is ranging from 1.25 to 4.70 mg/ml. In the arc tube, since the Xe gas sealing pressure slightly higher than 0.6 MPa, the pressure in the closed chamber is increased during its lightening state. Thus, reactions leading to a flicker occurrence may be accelerated. However, the flicker occurrence can be suppressed by setting the Sc halide sealing density to 4.70 mg/ml or less. Further, a luminous efficiency required for the lamp can be assured by setting the Sc halide sealing density to 1.25 mg/ml or more.

    • A method of manufacturing an arc tube for a discharge lamp unit, incorporating a primary pinch-sealing step for mounting an electrode assembly in an open end of a glass tube W with a chamber portion 12. The electrode assembly comprises an electrode rod 6, a connecting foil 7 and a lead wire 8 integrally connected in series. The electrode assembly is inserted into an open end of the glass tube W such that a leading end of the electrode rod projects into the chamber portion 12. A temporary pinch seal region L1 of the glass tube W is pinch-sealed such that a portion of the connecting foil that is connected to the lead wire is contacted by the glass tube W. A vacuum is maintained inside the glass tube and a main pinch seal region L2 of the glass tube is pinch-sealed such that a portion of the connecting foil connected to the electrode rod is contacted by the glass tube. When the main pinch seal region L2 of glass tube W is pinch-sealed, the negative pressure in the glass tube W is exerted on the softened sealed chamber portion 12 owing to supplied heat as well as the pressure exerted from the pincher 26b. Thus, the glass layer 15 is pressed against the surface of the molybdenum foil 7 so that hermetic contact is realized.
