    • 1352547 Forging manipulators ALLIANCE MACHINE CO 10 June 1971 [11 June 1970] 19883/71 Heading B3H A forging manipulator of the type having a wheeled carriage 10 with a peel 13 suspended thereon for horizontal, vertical and skewing movement relative to the carriage so that a workpiece carried by the peel jaws 36 automatically moves to its normal orientation when released by the forging tools of a press has its peel mounted in the carrier 21 suspended by a resiliently compressible fluid member and supported on two pairs of links 18, 19 forming part of a parallelogram linkage. The links 18 are pivotally connected between the carrier at 20 and one end of a lever 23 pivoted to the frame 25 of the carriage. The links 19 are pivotally connected between the rear of the carrier 21 and a lever 29 pivoted to the links 18. An hydraulic cylinder 40 urges the peel longitudinally of the carriage which is moved continuously by hydraulic motors driving sprockets 15 engaged with chains 16. When the workpiece is held by the forging tools fluid is displaced from the cylinder 40 and stored in a pressure accumulator (not shown). Thus when the tools release the workpiece the peel is accelerated to place a fresh portion of workpiece in the press. The peel can be rotated by an hydraulic motor 13a. Any sideways movement of the peel is cushioned by hydraulic cylinders 44a. An hydraulic life cylinder 31 is provided between the carriage and the lever 23 and has a pneumatic air cushion 35 which acts as the resiliently compressible fluid member.

A flanging machine, e.g. for producing flanges on plates for tank heads &c. comprises means for holding and rotating a circular plate to be flanged about the plate axis, roller means adapted to engage the plate on opposite sides thereof adjacent the plate axis, means for moving the rollers outwardly therefrom towards the edge of the plate and means for changing the axis of the rollers with respect to the plane of the plate whereby the plate is bent from its original plane to a plane parallel to the axis of the rollers. The machine comprises a base 10, an upright 11 housing a motor driven arbor 16 extending therefrom and coaxial with an hydraulically driven tailstock unit 14 on an upright 12 between which is held and rotated a plate 15 and a frame 18 on which is mounted a tailpiece 20 movable therealong by an hydraulic -cylinder unit 22. An arm 23 pivotally mounted on a shaft 24 of the tailpiece 20 is rotated thereabout by an hydraulic cylinder unit 25a pivotally coupled to the opposite end 26 thereof in which is journalled a roller head 27 rotatable by an hydraulic cylinder unit 30 via a crank arm 28. The effective radius of the arm 23 relative to the tailpiece is adjusted by a motor driven headscrew 41 rotatably coupled at 42 in the arm 23 and passing through a nut 43 on the tailpiece. Mounted on dovetail ways 31 of the head 27 is a roller arm 32 slidable therealong by an hydraulic cylinder unit 39 and on which is pivotally mounted at 35 a movable roller arm 34 actuated by an hydraulic cylinder unit 38 which brings a roller 36 thereon into contact with the plate 15. A plate centering device is positioned about the arbor 16 and comprises a pair of U-shaped members 45, 46 having racks 50 to which are attached fingers 47a, 48a and an hydraulic cylinder unit 49 which drives the member 45 vertically and in doing so rotates a gear 51 between the racks to effect a similar opposite movement of the member 46. A support and guide member 58 attached to the frame 18 supports the arm 23 against lateral movement and flexing from normal during vertical travel. In operation.-The plate 15 is placed on the fingers 47a, 48a and cylinder 49 actuated to close the fingers to effect centring thereof, the cylinder unit 14a actuated to clamp the plate against the arbor 16 and the centering unit reopened, the length of the arm 23 adjusted and locked by a hand wheel 52, the tailpiece 20, arm 23, head 27 and arm 32 moved along ways 19 by means of cylinder unit 22 to position the roller 33 thereon against the plate and the roller 36 brought into contact with the opposite side thereof. The plate is subsequently rotated and the arm 23 rotated downwardly by cylinder unit 25a until a limit switch 54 on the member 26 trips against an adjustable stop 55 to arrest further movement thereof and open a valve to cylinder 30 which rotates the head 27 to produce the sharp radius on the flange until a further switch 56 on the crank 28 is tripped to arrest this movement and open the valve 22 which moves the tailstock and thus the rollers 33, 36 parallel to the axis of rotation of the plate to form flange portion 15a.
