Speed indicators ; fares, registering ; counting- apparatus. - Relates to apparatus for recording the length of the journeys made by a vehicle, the rate of progression, and the stoppages during the journey, and comprising distance and time printing wheels and an " in motion recorder, in which the distance-printing wheels 2, 3, 4, Fig. 5, are driven from a vehicle - actuated shaft a through bevel and spur gearing, and a clutch d , f . The spur gearing may be made adjustable for varioussized vehicle wheels. Intermittent movement of the printing wheels is produced by a pin f on the wheel f engaging with a projection h on a wheel h, which revolves a wheel i against a spring i as shown in Fig. 10. Further movement of the wheel allows the spring to produce a quick forward movement until a second projection h strikes the pin f . Teeth h on the interior of the wheel h engage with a pin-wheel j, which engages with continuous teeth on the interior of the first typewheel 2. Transfer to the tens and hundreds wheels 3, 4 is effected in a similar manner. To ensure correct positioning of the disks, each numeralwheel is formed with ten ratchet teeth k on one side and continuous teeth on the other adapted to engage with spring barrels l formed with gaps at l to prevent overwinding. The number of teeth h is proportioned so as to move the type-wheels a little more than a tenth, the wheels l serving to bring them back against a series of detents k . The printing-wheels are zeroized by the wheels l when the detents k' are raised on rotating the shaft k , on which they arc mounted, by a lever n. Spring-controlled stops m allowing movement in one direction only limit the return movement of the printing-wheels. The movement of the lever n also serves through a cam o and a fork to declutch the wheels f, d. Time. printing wheels p, q, Fig. 2 are mounted alongside the distance wheels and between them is situated the " in motion" recorder consisting of a recording-point 5 yieldingly mounted in a spring-controlled arm 8 and given an intermittent motion by a crank 6 with a driving-connexion similar to that used between the wheels f, h. The gearing is such that when the vehicle is in motion a practically continuous mark is made. The record-strip is carried by two clock - driven rolls t, t mounted on a platen s provided with suitable openings for the recording- wheels and the " in motion recorder. The recordstrip runs under an inking-ribbon w mounted on spring rollers w , w . The platen is pivoted on the axis of the roll t and is lowered on to the recording-wheels by a clock-driven cam v. To prevent the descent of the platen when the type-wheels are moving quickly, a tapered lug y on the platen s engages with a similar lug z on the wheel h. To allow printing only when both the record-strip and the printing-wheels are stationary, the record-strip is moved forward intermittently and the platen allowed to fall between such movements by a clock-controlled pin-wheel engaging with slots or guides in the platen. The contact is retarded should the distance wheels be in operation by a pin or lug on the platen engaging slots in the printing - wheel. A flexible driving - connexion is provided for the printing - wheels. The recordstrip may be transparent and printed on both sides. The platen may be only allowed to descend when the vehicle is in motion by a lever 15 actuated through a rod 14 by a crank 12 operated by a centrifugal governor 12, which may also operate a speed - indicating hand 12 . Fig. 13. The " in "motion" recorder may be moved into contact with the record-strip only when the governor is rotating. The casing is provided with a false lid x , Fig. 2, which when replaced returns the lever n to the operative position if necessary. When used with hackney carriages, an ' engaged ' and ' disengaged ' indicator of the usual type is provided to record, by a pencil actuated from the flag, the length of time engaged, and to exhibit the distance travelled, the time occupied, and the fare chargeable. Excess fares may also be recorded, shown, and registered on a totalizer ; different tariffs may be employed, and with a motor vehicle, the time the engine is at rest may be recorded.
