摘要： Frozen pieces of sterile medium, such as saline, are dislodged from a sterile drape container (11) in a surgical slush producing machine (10) by manipulating the drape (17) relative to the cooled basin (11) to which the drape container conforms. Manipulation of the drape is achieved by pushing, twisting, pulling, lifting, etc., on the drape to displace it from the basin. Such movement of the drape may be effected on a continuous and automatic basis, or by manual means using a member or implement (33, 34) to facilitate drape movement. The system cabinet includes a refrigerated compartment (15, 17) for pre-chilling sterile liquid to be used in forming the surgical slush.

摘要： A sterile drape assembly includes a sheet of sterile drape material (17) bonded to a disk-like member (19). The drape establishes a sterile field atop a surgical slush machine (10) and is conformable to a cooling basin (11) to provide a drape container impervious to the sterile slush medium. The disk-like member is preferably bonded to the bottom of the drape container and is engageable by a movable member (29) projecting into the basin. The movable member (e.g., a longitudinally reciprocable vertical shaft) moves the member and the drape to dislodge frozen pieces of the sterile medium that attach to the sides of the drape container.

Basin centering indicia (52, 53) on the drape facilitate deployment of the drape relative to the basins and selectively removable covers insulate and protect the sterile medium between periods of use. A surgical drape (17) is combined with a sensor (14), preferably attached to the drape (17), to detect whether or not liquid is present in a drape container conforming to a heating/cooling basin (11). An alternative embodiment employs sensors at opposite surfaces of the drape to measure conductance and, thereby, leakage through the drape. A microprocessor in each embodiment receives a signal representing, for example, an electrical conductance measurement from the sensors and determines if liquid is present, or alternatively if the conductance is sufficient to represent the presence of a leak.

The thermal treatment system may either heat or congeal the sterile medium. The sensing device is typically disposed through the drape to provide a signal indicating the presence of liquid and/or leaks within the drape container to the system to facilitate control of system operation. In addition, the sensing device may be affixed to a plural basin drape utilized for a multiple basin thermal treatment system. The drape forms a drape receptacle within each basin, while a sensing device is typically disposed within each drape receptacle to detect the presence of liquid and/or a leak within that drape receptacle to facilitate control of system operation in substantially the same manner described above.

摘要： The presence of a drape on a thermal treatment system for ensuring sterility of a sterile medium contained within a thermal treatment system basin is determined by the use of a drape identifier and corresponding detector. When a drape containing the identifier is placed on the corresponding thermal treatment system, a detector senses and verifies the drape identifier to determine the presence of the drape on the thermal treatment system. A controller receives a signal from the detector indicating whether or not a drape is present on the thermal treatment system. If a drape is not present on the thermal treatment system, the controller prevents thermal treatment system operation. Various drape identifiers may be utilized to indicate the presence of the drape on the thermal treatment system, such as bar codes, mechanical and optical keys, light filter patches disposed on the drape passing various intensities or bands of light, reflective material segments disposed on the drape or reflective material used to construct the drape itself for reflecting light from a light source toward a light detector, and magnetic media in the form of magnetic strips disposed on the drape or a magnetic pigment or resin additive incorporated into the drape material.
