Additionally, the clamp assembly (16) includes a screw guide (20) that is secured to at least one of the clamp sides (224) (226). The screw guide (20) provides information for selecting the appropriate bone screw (18) based on the relative position of the clamp sides (224) (226).

With this design, when the driver region (18) is decoupled from the screw region (16), a screw break surface (460) is positioned below a portion of the head area (232) of the screw region (16).     • A bone screw driver (12) for inserting a bone screw (14) into a bone region (218A) includes a driver shaft (12B) that selectively engages the bone screw (14). The bone screw (14) includes a screw threaded region (14A) and a screw engagement region (14B). The screw engagement region (14B) includes a screw shaft (14D) and an engager ring (14E). The driver shaft (12B) includes a shaft aperture (322), a first resilient member (324A), and a first shaft projection (326A). The shaft aperture (322) receives at least a portion of the screw shaft (14D), the first resilient member (324A) engages the screw shaft (14D) to inhibit movement of the screw shaft (14D), and the first shaft projection (326A) engages the engager ring (14E) so that rotation of the driver shaft (12B) results in rotation of the bone screw (14). With this design, in certain embodiments, the bone screw (14) can be removed with the bone screw driver (12) from a screw retainer (16) that retains the bone screw (14), and inserted into the bone region (218A) without the physician contacting with the bone screw (14). This reduces the likelihood of contaminating the bone screw (14) and increases the likelihood of success for the procedure.

    • A bone staple (10) for securing a first bone region (12A) to a second bone region (12B) includes a staple body (16) having a first leg section (18), a second leg section (20), and a connector section (22). The first leg section (18) is insertable into the first bone region (12A). The second leg section (20) is insertable into the second bone region (12B). The connector section (22) connects the first leg section (18) to the second leg section (20). The connector section (22) includes a deformable region (22A) that is movable from a first configuration (14A) in which the leg sections (18) (20) are spaced apart a first distance (24) and a second configuration (14B) in which the leg sections (18) (20) are spaced apart a second distance (26) that is less than the first distance (24). In one embodiment, compression of the deformable region (22A) causes the deformable region (22A) to move from the first configuration (14A) to the second configuration (14B). As a result of this design, the bone staple (10) can easily be moved from the first configuration (14A) to the second configuration (14B). The deformable region (22A) can be substantially square ring shaped and can define a region aperture (22D) that is substantially square in the first configuration (14A). Further, the deformable region (22A) can be substantially oval ring shaped and the region aperture (22D) can be generally rectangular shaped in the second configuration (14B).
