    • A chair (10) is provided having at least one arm rest (20) which may be laterally adjusted in order to adjust the width between the opposing arm rests (20, 20) and accommodate different size users. The arm rest is attached to the chair arm (16) for lateral movement inboard and outboard of the chair arm. The arm rest is also attached to the chair arm for pivotable movement between a lockedposition wherein a latch (32b) attached to one of the arm rest or the chair arm latchedly engages the other of the arm rest or thechair arm for selectively locking the arm rest in the desired lateral position and an unlocked position for permitting the arm rest to be laterally adjusted. In one embodiment, the arm rest has a latch mechanism (22) which comprises a lower bracket (34) rigidly attached to the chair arm and an upper bracket (36) slidably and pivotably attached to the lower bracket so that the upper bracket pivots between the locked and unlocked positions and may move in the lateral direction relative to the lower bracket in the unlocked portion. The arm rest is attached to the upper bracket so that the arm rest may slide in the lateral direction or pivot between the locked and unlocked positions in cooperation with the upper bracket.

    • Office furniture units, particularly desks (10), are fabricated of panel members (12,50,54,58,60,66), cut from standard pre-finished flat wood panels, to their precise final configuration, by an NC controlled automatic router, including all holes, recesses and the like required in each panel member. The panel members have configurations which constitute the intelligence to assure their precise alignment as they are subassembled into furniture panel components by securing the appropriate panel members together in multiple layers, and for reception of two-part mechanical fasteners in appropriate positions to insure proper positioning of the panel components with respect to one another in the final assembly of the panel components into a functional office furniture unit. The panel components are assembled with one another in T-joint fashion, with the edge surface of one panel abutting a major side surface of the respective transverse panel to which being joined, using cam-type fastener components which secure the panel components together in firm edge-abutment relationships. The multiple layers of panel members provide reinforcement and rigidity of the panel components where necessary, as well as visual thickness effect. In each instance, one of the panel members is of the configuration of the final panel component. Several of the panel members include edge tabs which protrude laterally of the respective subassembled components for interfitting in recesses provided in mating panels to provide enhanced shear strength across the T-joint interpanel connections in the final assembly of the furniture unit. The structure and method also provide flexibility to produce differing furniture items in successive machining and assembly operations, for rapid production of a variety of different products "to order" from a single machine.

    • A low cost task chair (10) comprises a blow molded seat support member (24) having a central planar portion (34) for attachment of a control bracket (36). A recess (38) in the planar portion (34) beneath the control bracket (36) receives a cross brace (40). A pair of arm support frames (22) are secured to the ends of the cross brace (40) and to the control bracket (38). The arms (22) are, therefore, easily assembled to the chair (10) with the cross brace (40) concealed from view. A pedestal (26) is secured to the control bracket (36) and contains a gas cylinder (100) for raising and lowering the seat assembly (12). Another recess (44) is formed in the seat support member (24) for receiving a flush mounted cylinder actuating lever (46). A seat back adjustment mechanism for adjusting the outward position of the back (14) relative to the seat (12) comprises a pair of parallel spaced tubular members (52) telescopingly received by the control bracket (36). A blow molded back support (48) is provided with wedge-shaped channels for receiving a pair of tubular members (52) of a back support frame (48), thereby providing for a back height adjustment feature.

    • A tiltable chair has a base, a vertical post (14), a seat, a back and a chair control. The chair control comprises a housing (34) attached to the vertical post, a resilient biasing means (42) mounted in the stationary housing for biasing the chair in an upright position, a seat support structure (36), a back support structure (38) and a back frame member. The seat support structure is pivotally connected to the housing at a pivot axis (A) aligned over the vertical post. The back support structure is pivotally connected to the seat support structure at an axis (B) forward of the vertical post. One end of the back frame member supports the back support structure while a mid-portion is interconnected to the seat support structure and the opposite end is pivotally attached to the housing to provide both differential tilting of the seat and back and correlated differential vertical movement for ergonomic comfort and to avoid "shirt pull." A spring mount assembly (30) comprising compression springs compressed between the front portion of the seat and the seat support structure provides resilient but flexible seat support. A base cover assembly comprises top and bottom fairings which form a friction fit with the base and which also snap fit together to provide a smooth, attractive appearance.
