    • An image reading device includes a document stacking tray on which documents are stacked, a feed roller for picking up, one sheet at a time, the documents that are stacked on the document stacking tray, a curved transporting path through which the document is transported, and a CCD reading unit and a CIS reading unit for reading images from the document. The document stacking tray includes a electric tray for raising or lowering the document within a range of a height of the curved transporting path, so as to feed the document to the feed roller. With such an arrangement, it is possible to provide an image reading device and an image forming apparatus that are capable of separating and transporting a large number of documents and efficiently reading images from the documents even when the documents are thick.

    • An on-board emergency reporting apparatus includes a collision detection sensor, an airbag inflator for inflating an airbag in the event of collision detection, an airbag deflator for deflating the inflated airbag, a camera for capturing an image of an occupant seated on a seat provided with the airbag, a controller for transmitting the captured image to an emergency reporting center through a communication device, and a deflation sensor for detecting whether the volume of the inflated airbag is reduced to a predetermined threshold value. The controller causes the camera to start capturing upon detection of a reduction in the volume of the inflated airbag to the predetermined threshold value.

    • A communication system capable of employing polarization-dependent phase modulators with a reversing configuration that preserves security against disturbance of a polarization state at a transmission path but without using Faraday mirrors and a communication method using the same are provided. A quantum cryptography system of the present invention includes a first station 1, a transmission path 2, and a second station 3. The first station 1 has means for emitting time-divided optical pulses into the transmission path 2 and measuring a phase difference between the optical pulses returning from the transmission path 2. The transmission path 2 is a medium of light. The second station 3 has means for reversing traveling directions of the optical pulses, means for producing a phase difference, corresponding to a random number bit value to be transmitted, between the time-divided optical pulses, means for splitting the entering optical pulse into orthogonally polarized components and producing a 180-degree phase difference therebetween, means for rotating each polarization direction by 90 degrees, means for eliminating a component resulting from a deviation from the polarization rotation angle of 90 degrees, and means for attenuating optical pulse intensity to include no more than 1 photon per bit.

    • It is an object to increase a speed of a CPU operation irrespective of an operation speed of a peripheral circuit and to prevent an increase in power consumption from being thereby caused. A clock generating circuit (10) generates two clocks having phases which are equal to each other, that is, a CPU clock (CLKCPU) and a bus clock (CLKBUS). A BIU (bus interface unit) (51) controls a code bus based on the CPU clock (CLKCPU) and controls a peripheral bus based on the bus clock (CLKBUS). The clock generating circuit (10) switches a frequency of each of the CPU clock (CLKCPU) and the bus clock (CLKBUS) depending on an operation mode of an MCU. For example, a speed of the CPU clock (CLKCPU) is set to be higher than that of the bus clock (CLKBUS) in order to carry out a high-speed operation of a CPU. Also in that case, the phases of both clocks are equal to each other. Consequently, the code bus and the peripheral bus in the BIU (51) can easily be controlled.
