    • A machine for testing ball joints, elastomer bushings or other parts has a pair of mutually rotated gimbals attached to the outer shell or element for applying rotational displacements about two axes and a linear input attached to the inner element to apply a force along another axis. Each axis input is effected by a linear actuator and the gimbal inputs are specially designed to assure accurate independent control without parasitic motion between the inputs. Force and displacement transducers monitor each axis to provide feedback signals to control circuits. A heat chamber including the gimbal assembly has hot air applied from an external source through a hollow gimbal hub to hold the test specimen at a desired temperature.

    • An hydraulic proximity probe arrangement for determining the spacing of the surface of a rotating body from another fixed body as it rotates in a fluid medium. The body is provided with a plurality of circumferentially and equally spaced surface irregularities of like size and shape, such as indentations or projections, and at least a pair of probes are circumferentially spaced around the body, each being axially spaced an equal distance from the body's surfaces when at rest. The probes pick-up pulsations in the fluid medium caused by the rotating body, the amplitudes of which are indicative of the spacing of the surface of the rotating body from the end of the probes. These pulsations are signalized and the resultant signals are compared with calibrated deviation signals to provide data indicative of the spacing of the body's surface from a reference point during rotation of the body.

    • An apparatus is disclosed for subjecting a test valve actuator to torque loads which simulate the torque loads an actuator would be expected to experience in field operation when opening and closing a butterfly-type valve in a fluid conduit. The apparatus includes a frame supporting both a drive shaft and a tail shaft mounted for rotation about horizontal axis of rotation. The test actuator is mounted on the frame and coupled to the drive shaft for rotating the shaft 90.degree. about its axis. A sprocket fixed to the drive shaft is connected by a link chain to a sprocket fixed to the tail shaft. The sprockets are selected to have a 3 to 1 gear reduction ratio with the tail shaft rotating 3 degrees for each degree of rotation of the tail shaft. A mass depending from the tail shaft generates a torque load at the tail shaft equal to one third the dynamic torque load for corresponding positions of the actuator. The torque load is transmitted to the actuator through the sprockets and link chain with the torque amplified three times to approximate the dynamic torque load. A second mass, pivotally supported away from the tail shaft, is engaged and rotated as the first mass approaches a position corresponding with a valve opened position. The torque produced by the second mass together with the torque produced by the first mass equals one-third the expected seating torque load which is transmitted to the actuator and amplified three times by the sprockets and link chain to approximate the seating torque. Circuitry is disclosed for permitting repetitious operation of the apparatus to cycle the actuator from opened position to closed position and back to opened position.

    • A portalbe apparatus is disclosed for the diagnosis of a rotating machinery utilizing a fast Fourier transform frequency spectrum analysis system. The presence or absence of an abnormality or trouble in the rotating machinery is determined by selecting high amplitudes out from the frequency spectrum computed by the FFT frequency spectrum analysis system, arithmetically processing distribution data of spectrum amplitudes adjacent each frequency giving the corresponding high amplitude, and detecting the amplitude, at which the frequency of vibrations of the rotating machinery has attained a maximum value, together with such frequency. The diagnosis of the rotating machinery with this apparatus can be performed in situ, i.e., at the site of installation of such machinery.

    • A method and apparatus for testing seismic shock absorbing snubbers in situ. Such snubbers are used in power plants in association with piping that is yieldably attached by way of pipe hangers or supports to the plant building structure. Typically, snubbers are operatively connected between the pipe and the building or other support structure. Such snubbers permit free motion of the pipe in response to slow thermal expansion or contraction of the pipe, but resist or damp rapid motion of the pipe induced by seismic shock or vibration. In a method aspect of the invention, the snubber system permits testing in situ by loosening, but not disconnecting, a connection between the snubber and the pipe (or, alternatively, between the snubber and the support structure) to permit limited motion between two relatively movable sections of the snubber, without inducing movement of the adjacent pipe; then applying a test force between the relatively movable sections of the snubber to cause relative movement therebetween to determine the operation of the snubber.
