    • The invention relates to an ignition unit which releases a retaining means in a motor vehicle by means of a pyrotechnic active element, comprising an ignition bridge with a pyrotechnic charge (9), a receiving element for electronic components (3) such as control and signal processing elements, and connection pins (7) for connecting electronic components (3). In order to improve tightness and to simplify manufacturing, the invention provides for the following: the receiving component is a ceramic plate (1); the ignition bridge element is configured as an ignition bridge resistor (4) disposed on said ceramic plate (1); the ceramic plate (1) protrudes through a metal ring (6) via a seal (5) and has an active side (12), when seen from the metal ring (6), and a control side (13); essentially, only the ignition bridge resistor (4) is arranged on the active side (12) while the electronic components (3) and the connection pins (7) are arranged on the control side; the active side (12) is fully enclosed by a metal envelope (10) which is joined to the metal ring (6) in a gastight manner.

    • A perforating gun (15) or other downhole tool includes one or more explosive devices (20) that are activable by corresponding one or more initiator devices (21), such as capacitor discharge units (CDUs). Each CDU (21) includes an explosive foil initiator (EFI) (22) or some other type of a high-energy bridge-type initiator, an energy source (18) (e.g., a slapper capacitor), and a switch (62) coupling the energy source (18) and the EFI (22) or other bridge-type initiator. An electrical cable (17) is coupled to the CDUs (21) for providing a voltage to energize the energy source (18) in the CDUs (21) to provide energy to each EFI (22). In response to activation of a trigger signal down the electrical cable (17), the switch (62) is closed to couple the energy source (18) to the EFI (22).
