An ironing-press for collar-attached garments has a shaped element 13 to hold the garment, having a divided collar support 18, 19, a part 18 of which can be set in different positions depending on the collar size, displacement of part 18 adjusting a setting means 22 which, by displacing the pressing shoe 17 or the shaped element 13, aligns the collar support 18, 19 and a collar cut-out 17a in the pressing shoe 17. The part 18 is set by means of a spring-loaded rod 20, and holes 24 in element 13, and is linked to a roller 22 by a rod 21. In Fig. 4, when element 13 is moved in front of pressing shoe 17, the roller 22 contacts a roller guide 25 which pulls element 13 downwards on its carriage 16 against springs 14. In a second embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown), roller 22 moves a cam member 25 which moves pressing shoe 17 to the required vertical position by lever means 26, 27, 28, a counterweight 33 for shoe 17 being provided. In a third embodiment (Fig. 8), similar to the second, several elements 13 are provided on a turntable 34, each element having a metal upper rear surface 36, there being a padded neck pressing shoe 35 engageable with the surface 36 and with the shoe 17 over the top of element 13, thereby pressing a shoulder crease in the garment. The elements 13 &c. may be horizontal, vertical or inclined.

Clothing with a collar is steamed and ironed in an apparatus which stretches and positions the clothing so that the collar and at least a part of the shoulder are ironed between pressing- elements and at least a part of the clothing adjoining the collar and shoulder is stretched and steamed by inflating a permeable sack with steam. The clothing is stretched over a stationary pressing-element 16 and clamped between adjustable plates 23, 25 and 22, 24 secured by springs to levers 28 and 29. The element 16 is attached to a vertical support 15 over which a permeable nylon sack 17 is placed and attached at 18 to a table 14. The shoulder part of the clothing is supported on hinged adjustable shoulder supports 21 operated by a pedal 41. The steaming cycle controlled by a time switch involves feeding steam into sack 17 via tube 35 for a set time, then blowing hot air into the sack from blower 38 via heater 40 which is heated by steam for a predetermined period, and finally blowing in cold air. The ironing operation is manually operated and the pressing is effected between fixed plate 16 and a movable upper press-plate 4 which has a heated matrix 5 into which steam is fed via 6 and a steampermeable cover 7. Steam may also be supplied to plate 16 and after the pressing, air is drawn through plate 16 to cool the clothing. The steaming and pressing may be effected separately, simultaneously or partly overlap.

    • 589,204. Ironing-machines. BURGESS, A. F. (Forse Corporation). March 19, 1945, No. 6862. [Class 138 (ii)] The rotatable ironing cylinder 29 has a floating support in side frames 10, and is expanded by internal pressure into contact with a stationary heated shoe 22 which embraces at least 60 per cent. of its periphery. The cylinder is of rubber or a rubber substitute. It is mounted between end plates 43 secured together by tierods 51 having driving engagement with ribs 40 on the cylinder, the end plates being secured to sprockets 53 which are suspended on their driving chains 100, end thrust being taken by adjustable members 59. Compressed air from a pump 90 is supplied to the roller through a flexible tube 58, and a nipple 72 running air-tight in a bearing 64 on the frame. There may be several rollers arranged to act on the articles in succession. In the arrangement of two rollers shown, an endless belt 20 conveys the articles from an upper feed-in point and around the two rollers to a delivery table 38', and a transfer table 36 can be adjusted to take off articles after passing the first cylinder. The belt is taken over a pulley 19 on a main driving shaft 15, which is also connected by chain gearing with the driving sprockets 81 of the roller driving chains 100. In a modified form of cylinder, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) suction is applied to channels extending radially through the cylinder for the purpose of removing steam generated during ironing. These channels open into the bores in the ribs 40, which are sealed off from the cylinder interior, and connected with a suction pump 281.

    • 22,422. Lehmann, A. Oct. 4. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Ironing-machines with roller and stationary iron. -The necks or collar-bands and yokes of shirts are ironed by placing them in position upon a partly felt-covered former a, a mounted upon a rotating shaft b driven by means of screw gearing e with pedal-operated belt-shifting gear, the former being heated internally by means of a gas burner a . After the work is in position, an iron h, shaped to correspond with the former, is forced against it and is kept stationary in the pressing position during ironing. The iron is heated internally, air and gas being supplied through the hollow arm h that supports it, and the necessary movement is obtained by means of a handle k carrying a camplate grooved to engage the teeth of a wheel h secured to the arm and pivoted upon a spindle j . A stationary guard g, constructed of any suitable fabric and supported upon the spindle b, prevent entanglement of the sbirt with the mechanism. According to the Provisional Specification, the front of the shirt is carried by a wire guard to ensure the shirt remaining in position ; the handle for moving the pressing-iron may also operate by means of teeth thereon.

    • 29,785. Tannenbaum, R., and Reichardt, P. May 7, [Convention date]. Ironing-machines with pressing action only.-A press for shaping garments comprises upper and lower members 6, 2, each provided with a pair of pressing-surfaces and pivotally mounted so that either surface can be brought into action. One surface 14, 15 on each member is flat, and the other 16, 17 is suitably formed so as to shape the various portions of coats. The member 6 overhangs the lower member, Fig. 4, which is provided with removable attachments 23 shaped to correspond with the configuration of the overhanging portion. A gap 25 is arranged for, in order that the collar portions shall not be pressed while the shoulder parts are under treatment. The members 2, 6 are held in their adjusted positions by means of pins 19 passed through slots in the supports 1, 4 and into holes in the members. The upper member may be depressed by means of a cam-lever 11 mounted on a swivelling arm 10, or by means of a treadle connected with the counterweighted lever 4.
