An ironing press for shoulder parts of clothing comprises two heads 5, 6 adapted to be applied independently and sequentially to overlapping areas of a curved supporting buck 4. As shown, the press includes two bucks 4, 4a for pressing left-hand and right-hand portions of the article. The heads may be operated manually or by hydraulic or pneumatic means through linkage as shown. The bucks may have steaming and vacuum-applying means (not shown). Two presses may be arranged at an angle (in plan view) for operation from one position (Fig. 4, not shown).

The upper plate 3 of an ironing press is carried on an arm 4 actuated through a toggle linkage 9, 10, 11 by a piston 11a in a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder 13. The closing operation is effected in two stages, the first, upon the manual operation of a valve 23 being a rapid closure stage, which is terminated when a cam projection 30 on link 10 engages the feeler 29 of a valve 28 which thereupon supplies a fluid impulse for closing a switch-over valve 25 for stopping the fluid supply to cylinder 13. The pressing stage is then carried out by actuating another valve 35 in addition to valve 23. By an electrical or other connection between valve 23 and a switch-over valve 37 the latter is opened with valve 23 so that pressure fluid is supplied therethrough to the cylinder 13. The operation is terminated by opening an exhaust valve 39 by a pedal lever 40. The valve 28 is on an arm 31 which is pivotally adjustable by an adjustment device 34a to vary the point at which the closure stage stops.
