    • A strain sensing device is provided, which may include a hollow, cylindrical member having an inner surface and an outer surface. The outer surface may have an outer diameter corresponding approximately in size to an inner diameter of an inner surface of a cylindrical bore of a structural component configured to undergo mechanical loading. The hollow, cylindrical member may be configured to mate to the inner surface of the cylindrical bore of the structural component such that strain in the structural component is translated into strain in the hollow, cylindrical member. The strain sensing device may also include one or more strain sensing elements attached to the inner surface of the hollow, cylindrical member and configured to detect strain exhibited by the hollow, cylindrical member.

    • The present invention relates to an arrangement of measuring devices on a semitrailer motor vehicle having a tractive unit, a semitrailer unit and a fifth wheel fastened to the tractive unit. The fifth wheel has a coupling plate which is pivotally disposed on a support structure such as a support block. The measuring arrangement includes measuring devices for measuring acceleration, tractive or braking forces which arise in the fifth wheel of the tractive unit. In the various embodiments disclosed herein, the measuring devices are incorporated into the support structure. If desired, the measuring devices may also include devices for effecting measurement of the weight of the semitrailer. The measured values are converted in an evaluation device into appropriate control commands for influencing the driving behavior of the semitrailer motor vehicle.

    • A draft force sensor includes a bendable shaft which extends laterally though a pair of spaced apart supports. Draft links are coupled to the ends of the shaft. A curved flexible strap is positioned between the supports and has its ends coupled to the shaft by adjustable support brackets. In a no-load condition the strap is concave in a direction facing the shaft. A displacement transducer, such as a rectilinear potentiometer, linear variable transformer or other electrical device which is sensitive to displacement, is mounted between the shaft and the central portion of the strap. The displacement transducer senses the change of distance from the shaft to the "arch" of the strap and generates an electrical signal indicative of the forces on the shaft. The load from the draft links is applied to the ends of the shaft, causing it to bend and causing the strap to flex in the opposite direction. Thus, the shaft and strap act as a mechanical amplifier. The resulting draft sensor can sense both tension and compression.

    • An articulated tractor has left and right laterally spaced apart, fore-and-aft extending side frame members which are rigidly attached between front and rear drawbar supports. The tractor also includes left and right draft links, each draft link having a front end coupled to a corresponding one of the side frame members and a rear end for coupling to an implement. A draft force sensing mechanism includes a displacement transducer mounted on one of the side frame members. A lever is pivotally mounted near the transducer and carries a plunger or shaft which operatively engages the transducer. A rod has a first end fixed to the other side frame member and a second end coupled to the lever so that changes in draft force cause deflection of the side frame members and movement of the lever relative to the transducer. The transducer responds by generating a signal representing the draft force. Movement of the rod is amplified by the lever.
