    • A tripping torque setting mechanism of an overload clutch having an adjusting nut threadedly engageable with a thread provided on a cylindrical part of a clutch hub, the adjusting nut being tightened against a spring to produce an urging force corresponding to a predetermined tripping torque. A helical line having a pitch coinciding with the pitch of said thread and indicia for indicating the angular positions is provided on one of the adjusting nut or a member which does not rotate relative to the nut, and an indicator is provided on the other. The axially adjacent portions of the helical line are indicated by different colors and the indicia for indicating the angular positions are indicated by the same color as the portion of the helical line to which the indicia correspond. The indicator has a bent portion at one end which is inserted radially outwardly into a hole formed in the clutch pressure plate and has an axially extending portion next to the bent position and held in a gap between the pressure plate and one of the clutch coil springs.

    • Disengageable clutch with two clutch flanges which enclose a meshing arrangement which can be released and closed by axially shifting one of the two clutch flanges. The meshing arrangement is formed by pairs of bores which are opposite each other in the flanges and by balls. A nut is used to engage the clutch, which nut can be screwed on the spindle carrying the clutch flanges. A spring between the nut and the movable clutch flange holds the clutch flanges and the meshing arrangements against each other in the disengaged state, but when the shaft is turned manually it allows the balls to jump out of one of the associated bores. The rotary position in which the clutch can be engaged by tightening the nut is easy to find on account of the click-stop action of the balls.

    • A torque control tool for installing and removing threaded fasteners couples a driven section of the tool with a drive section of the tool through detent balls of the former and a clutch plate of the latter. The clutch plate keys to a stem of the drive section for rotation together and has semi-spherical sockets of substantially the same radius of curvature as the balls receiving the balls and lying on a circle about a rotational axis of the driven section. A carrier plate cages the balls so that they index with the clutch plate sockets and keys to the balance of the driven section to transmit torque to it. Reliefs to the side of each socket and centered on the circle of the sockets permit the detent balls to uncouple from the drive section at an applied installation torque less than the uncoupling torque in the opposite, removal direction. The depth of the reliefs leaves substantial spherically curved walls of the sockets opposing uncoupling torques in the installation direction and, accordingly, the balls can only come out of the sockets abruptly with no preliminary rotational movement between the balls and the socket about the rotational axis of the driven section. An axial compressive force acting between an adjustment cap and Belleville springs on the balls and clutch plate determines the torque at which the driven section uncouples from the drive section. A pressure plate interposes between the balls and the Bellevilles. A stem of the drive section couples to the clutch plate through a keyway that permits relative movement of the clutch plate along the axis of the stem. A thrust bearing between the adjustment cap and the clutch plate minimizes rotational drag. The carrier plate and pressure plate key to a housing of the driven section for relative axial movement with respect thereto but for rotation together.

    • The invention is an improved coupling or clutching means for driving between axially aligned rotating parts and is particularly adaptable in non-reversing tapping attachments. The attachment can, however, be driven in the reverse direction. Clutch drive means are provided for driving in either rotational direction. The clutch drive means is in the form of a sleeve having a ball race carrying driving balls interposed between axial splines on one part and axial grooves on the other part. The splines have an intermediate interruption for de-clutching after relative axial movement of the rotating parts. After further relative axial movement the balls re-engage the splines beyond the interruption, and the attachment is then driven in the reverse direction.

Each of the clutch and the reverse rotation transmitting element is axially movably supported by a spring for absorbing an axial impact load to be exerted on the driven shaft when the direction of rotation is switched.

    • A tapping attachment with a drive device, which does away with chattering usually encountered when releasing the clutch, by providing cushion springs at both ends in axial direction, and a clutch mechanism having flat projecting surfaces when the input or driving element of the clutch is allowed to move axially to drive the tap directly or reversely. The structure includes a direct-drive clutch with at least one axially projecting portion for engagement with a similar portion on one of two rotating members, between which normal torque is to be transmitted, and a reverse-drive clutch also with a projecting portion for engagement with another such portion on said one rotating member. Spring means are provided for axially biasing the reverse-drive clutch to avoid the chattering when the latter clutch comes into engagement with the last-mentioned projecting portion of the one rotating member.
