    • An endoscope according to the present invention comprises an insertion section which as a distal structure. An objective optical system is disposed in the distal structure so as to be substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis thereof. A solid-state image sensing device, which has a light receiving surface with an image area therein, is disposed in the distal structure, so as to be substantially parallel to a plane which contains the longitudinal axis of the distal structure. An optical element is attached to an end portion of the objective optical system, whereby the optical path of a light incident on the objective optical system is bent substantially at right angles, so that the light is guided to the light receiving surface of the image sensing device. The endoscope further comprises a forceps channel having one end attached to the distal structure. The longitudinal axis of the forceps channel is situated on a plane which contains the longitudinal axis of the objective optical system and extends substantially parallel to the light receiving surface of the image sensing device. Thus, the distal structure of the insertion section can be made thinner.

    • An endoscopic apparatus includes an endoscope body and a drive unit for driving the endoscope body. The endoscope body has a connector which is connected to a socket of the drive unit. The socket is provided with an electrical socket unit, an optical socket unit and a fluid socket unit which have central axes parallel to one another, respectively. The electrical socket unit is supported by support members to be movable in a direction perpendicular to the central axis of the unit. The connector has an electrical connector unit, an optical connector unit and a fluid connector unit which are adapted to be connected to the corresponding socket units. When the connector is connected to the socket, the electrical socket unit is guided by a guide mechanism to a position wherein it is located coaxial with the electrical connector unit.

    • An endoscope apparatus includes an endoscope and a drive device connected to the endoscope and having a light source. In the distal-end surface of the insertion section of the endoscope, an observation window and an illumination window are provided. A solid-state image sensor is arranged in the distal-end portion of the insertion section to face the observation window. The sensor receives an optical image passing through the observation window, converts the image into electrical signals and transfers the signals in both vertical and horizontal directions. The sensor is so arranged that the vertical transferring direction defines an angle of about 50.degree. to 90.degree. with a line extending between the centers of the observation and illumination windows.

    • An endoscope has an insertion section extended from an operation section. An observation window and an illumination window are formed in the distal end of the insertion section. The observation window is positioned nearer the distal end of the insertion section than the illumination window. A light guide extends from the illumination window through the insertion section and guides light emitted from a light source to emit the light from the illumination window. An objective lens system is arranged in the insertion section and optically connected to the observation window. An optical image of light, incident on the system through the observation window, is formed by the system. A solid-state image sensor is arranged in the insertion section and positioned nearer the distal end of the insertion section than the end of the light guide at the illumination window side. The sensor converts the optical image to an electrical signal and transmits it to a control unit.

    • In a method of cleaning an endoscope, the open ends of an air/liquid supply valve cylinder and a suction valve cylinder, both provided within a control section of the endoscope, are closed by stops. The ends of an air supply channel, a liquid supply channel and a suction channel, which open to a connector mounted on the distal end of a light guide cable, are connected to a connecting tube so that liquid may flow between these ends. The other end of the suction channel opening to the distal end of an insertion section is connected to a liquid tank filled with liquid through a liquid supply tube. The tank is connected to an air pump through an air supply tube. When the pump is operated, the liquid is supplied from the other end of the suction channel and discharged from a nozzle through the three channels, valve cylinders and the connecting tube, thereby cleaning the interiors of these channels and valve cylinders with the liquid.

The open ends of an air/liquid supply cylinder and a suction valve cylinder, both provided within a control section of the endoscope, are closed.
