    • A ship propulsion system in which the ship's propeller is connected with its propeller shaft directly to a drive mechanism. A thrust bearing in the drive mechanism receives directly the thrust of the propeller shaft. An auxiliary drive with an electrical machine is operable selectively as a motor or as a generator, and a coupling is provided between the electrical machine and transmission linkage in the auxiliary drive. A gear on the transmission surrounds the propeller shaft, and a flexible coupling connects the transmission to the propeller shaft. Mounted on a separate section of the propeller shaft between the transmission and the drive mechanism, is a shiftable coupling which is free of play and transmits torque from the drive mechanism to the propeller shaft as well as the thrust of the propeller shaft. An auxiliary thrust bearing is connected to the shiftable coupling and is actuated when the ship is in auxiliary or emergency operation during which the propeller shaft has a reduced thrust.

    • A power transfer device for an inboard/outboard motor which includes a propeller unit mounted on the hull of a vessel, the propeller unit including an input shaft for drive connection to an output shaft of the inboard/outboard motor, an intermediate shaft connected to a propeller shaft, a hydraulic clutch provided on the input shaft to establish a drive power train between the input shaft and intermediate shaft when it has been engaged and to disconnect the input shaft from the intermediate shaft when it has been disengaged, and a changeover mechanism of the gear selection type disposed between the input shaft and intermediate shaft for switching over the drive power train from a forward drive to a backward drive or vice versa. The power transfer device is provided with a hydraulic control apparatus for operating the changeover mechanism in shifting operation to switch over the drive power train from the forward drive to the backward drive or vice versa in a condition where the hydraulic clutch is maintained in its disengaged condition and for engaging the hydraulic clutch after the drive power train has been switched over from the forward drive to the backward drive or vice versa.

    • Disclosed herein is a marine propulsion device comprising an engine including a bottom face with an exhaust gas passage port, together with a lower unit connected to the bottom face and including a side surface, and an exhaust gas passage communicating with the engine port and terminating in a port in the side surface, and an exhaust gas passage conduit connected to the lower unit in communication with the port in the side surface and extending upwardly therefrom to above the power head and thence downwardly. The engine includes a cooling jacket, and the lower unit has a substantially closed cavity including a gear box portion and a sleeve portion, together with a water jacket cavity surrounding the sleeve portion, and water inlet means communicating with the water jacket cavity. In addition, the lower unit includes a reversing transmission in the gear box portion of the substantially closed cavity and connecting a propeller shaft to a drive shaft extending in the sleeve portion of the substantially closed cavity, and a water pump supported within the lower unit and communicating with the engine cooling jacket and with the water jacket cavity for delivering water from the water jacket cavity to the engine cooling jacket.
