    • A safety belt restraint system for restraining a passenger in his automotive vehicle seat has a pair of emergency locking safety belt retractors mounted in relatively close proximity to each other on the vehicle door near a lower portion thereof with a single safety belt strap running therebetween and through associated upper and lower belt guides on the door, there being a single connector fitting mounted in fixed relation to a mid-portion of the strap and being releasably anchored in a conventional safety belt buckle anchor located inboard of the vehicle seat, the retractors having large diameter spools sufficient to wind all of the webbing up adjacent to the vehicle door when the connector is released from the buckle. The safety belt restraint system is provided with a strap lifting assembly for a lap portion of the belt to facilitate ease of the user getting in and out of the vehicle, the lifting assembly includes a track located on the door and a motor to lift a connection element, attached to the lap portion of the belt, along the track when the vehicle door is opened, and a switch associated with the single connector fitting and the safety belt buckle anchor for deactivating the motor in response to removal of the connector fitting from the safety belt buckle anchor.

    • The drive means of the passive safety belt is provided with a coupling which is disposed between the takeoff side of the worm gearing and a cable drum (28) and which is formed by a toothed slider (20) and two internally toothed rings (29, 30) at the inner face of the cable drum (28). Said coupling is controlled by an inertia disk (25) in whose radial grooves (23, 24) guide studs (21, 22) of the toothed slider (20) are guided slidingly. The coupling is not engaged until an adequately high drive speed is reached, said engagement being effected in that the toothed slider (20) is moved radially outwardly and with one of its coupling teeth (31, 32) comes into engagement with the corresponding internally toothed ring (29, 30). When the coupling is disengaged the end fitting of the safety belt can be easily displaced by hand.

    • An automatically applied three point safety belt system includes a retractor reel located at one side of the vehicle seat and spring rewinding an inflatable tubular lap belt which is arcuate in its inflated state and a retractor reel located at the same side of the seat back above the occupant shoulder level and spring rewinding a shoulder belt having a rear inflatable tubular section which upon inflation, extends horizontally, forwardly of the occupant's shoulder. The ends of the belts are joined proximate an attached coupling ring which is lockable in engagement with a coupling hook on the other side of the seat. A flexible tube connects the interiors of the belts by way of a three way valve to a compressor, the valve being opened to connect the belt interiors to the compressor when the seat is occupied, and the vehicle door closed to inflate and extend the belts to advance the ring into engagement with the hook, and a manually, releasable locking member is actuated in response to such engagement, and the belts are deflated. A control network, including an inertia switch inflates the belts and locks the retractor reels under abnormal riding conditions, and recycles the application sequence when the ring is not engaged by the hook member.

    • A belt supporting member mounted on an inner side of a hinged door of a vehicle is constructed of a resilient wire and comprises a base portion fixed to the inner side of the door, a fulcrum portion extending from the base portion, a hair-pin portion extending downwardly from the fulcrum portion, a straight portion extending upwardly from the hair-pin portion while making an obtuse angle relative to the hair-pin portion, and a belt supporting portion extending from the straight portion for supporting thereon a portion of the belt. The connection of the belt supporting member to the door is such that when no external force is applied to the belt supporting member, the hair-pin portion is raised by a certain angle from the inner side of the door permitting the straight portion to lie on the inner side of the door by making the fulcrum portion act as a fulcrum. A blocking member is mounted to the vehicle body at a portion to which the top of the hair-pin portion is engageable upon closing of the door.
