    • Systems and methods are described for transmitting a waveform having a controllable attenuation and propagation velocity. An exemplary method comprises: generating an exponential waveform, the exponential waveform (a) being characterized by the equation V in = D e - A SD[ x-v SDt] , where D is a magnitude, V in is a voltage, t is time, A SD is an attenuation coefficient, and v SD is a propagation velocity; and (b) being truncated at a maximum value. An exemplary apparatus comprises: an exponential waveform generator; an input recorder coupled to an output of the exponential waveform generator; a transmission line under test coupled to the output of the exponential waveform generator; an output recorder coupled to the transmission line under test; an additional transmission line coupled to the transmission line under test; and a termination impedance coupled to the additional transmission line and to a ground.

    • The present invention relates to methods and apparatuses for sensing noise sources in a wireline communications environment such as a customer premises environment in a DSL system. In embodiments, the invention includes an additional sensor that is connected to power mains in a DSL customer premises environment either to characterize, at their source, noises coupling into the DSL l ines, and/or to mitigate their impact into the DSL lines. One objective is associated with diagnostics that help to better characterize the noise signals themselves and derive correlation of signals sensed from the power mains and their possible projection- onto the DSL line. Another objective makes use of these power line sensor signals to mitigate or to eliminate power line noises that make their way onto the DSL line. Example embodiments further include and exploit signals from additional secondary sensors such as secondary common mode, differential mode and phantom mode sensors.

    • The present invention relates to an arrangement for analyzing transmission line properties. Measurement data providing means (10) provide data of a first frequency dependent line property, line property calculation arrangement (20) with model handling means (21A), a Hubert transform handler (22) and line property determination means (23) calculate said first property based on model parameters, line resistance at 0 frequency, roc r cut-off frequency, v, line capacitance C∞r and line inductance ∑^. The line model handling means (21A) calculates the line inductance L(J) via a Hubert transform of Q(f/v)r relating line resistance R(J) to roc such as formula (I). The Hilbert transform values are calculated using a parameterized closed form expression for the Hubert transform or they are tabulated. The line property determination means (23; 23A) calculates the first property and criteria function application means (40) uses the measured first property and the calculated first property for model parameters to find optimized numerical model parameter values.
