    • A method and apparatus for rendering an image signal by adding another one color different from an inputted color, to an image signal composed of a predetermined number (for example, RGB) of components, is provided. The method for rendering image signals which represent a predetermined number of colors in an apparatus for rendering an image signal of which pixels have three sub-pixels, comprises (a) receiving a predetermined number of color signals and converting the predetermined number of color signals into four-color signals to be represented in the sub-pixels, (b) selecting two-color signals to be outputted alternatively in every other pixels out of the four-color signals and selecting only one-color signal for each position of a pixel area from the two-color signal, (c) recalculating a level value of the selected one-color signal to be represented in the sub-pixels, and (d) controlling image signals to be represented in the sub-pixels according to the level value of the one-color signal calculated in (c).

    • A method and apparatus for generating a white signal component and for controlling the brightness of an image are provided. In the above method and apparatus, the brightness increases of Red, Green and Blue, the saturations of which are not decreased from an input image are calculated using a vector, and the minimum value of such increases is utilized as the input value for the white component. Further, by adding brightness control components of RGB color to the input RGB signals, brightness increases in the direction of the original colors instead of the achromatic one are possible, which is the way the white component is added so as to increase the luminance of color display devices representing a color using a color filter such a flat panel display. Accordingly, a color saturation of the image is not decreased even with addition of the achromatic color a component. In other words, in converting a signal from the three colors such as RGB into the four colors inclusive of white component, the present invention is capable of increasing the brightness without reduction of saturation as well as extracting the white component in an easy and efficient way, which enhances the performance of image processing apparatuses such as color display devices and the like.

    • An image segmenting apparatus and method is provided. The image segmenting apparatus includes an initial image segmenting unit, a region structurizing unit and a redundant region combiner. The initial image segmenting unit converts color signals of an input image into a color space which is based on predetermined signals, and segments the input image into a plurality of regions according to positions of color pixels of the input image in the color space. The region structurizing unit classifies the plurality of regions into layers according to horizontal, adjacent relation and hierarchical, inclusive relation between the regions, and groups adjacent regions into region groups in each layer, so as to derive a hierarchical, inclusive relation between the region groups. The redundant region combiner determines the order in which adjacent regions are combined according to the horizontal, adjacent relation between regions and the hierarchical, inclusive relation between region groups. The redundant region combiner also determines whether to combine adjacent regions according to the determined combination order, and combines adjacent regions if the adjacent regions are determined to be substantially the same. Even if regions appears to be adjacent each other in a region adjacent graph (RAG), a structural inclusive relation between regions can be derived by excluding the combination of the regions or rearranging their combination order according to a hierarchical structure. Subsequently, the mutual relation between two regions can be inferred from the inclusive relation even if the color signals of the two regions, for example, a region in a highlighted area and a region in its surrounding area, are not similar to each other.
