    • Provided are a photodetector capable of suppressing variations in the output characteristics among photodiodes, and a display device provided with the photodetector. A display device in use has an active matrix substrate (20) including a transparency base substrate (2), a plurality of active elements and a photodetector. The photodetector includes a light-shielding layer (3) provided on one main surface of the base substrate (2), a photodiode (1) arranged on an upper layer of the light-shielding layer (3), and an electrode (12) arranged in the vicinity of the photodiode (1) on the upper layer of the light-shielding layer (3). The photodiode (1) includes a silicon layer (11), and the silicon layer (11) is insulated electrically from the light-shielding layer (3). The electrode (12) is insulated electrically from the light-shielding layer (3) and the silicon layer (11). The light-shielding layer (3) is formed so that a part thereof is overlapped with the entire silicon layer (11) and the other part is overlapped with the electrode (12) in the thickness direction of the base substrate (2).

    • A liquid crystal display device of the present invention includes a liquid crystal display panel (10) in which a liquid crystal layer (13) is arranged between an active matrix substrate (11) and a counter substrate (12). A plurality of optical sensors (16) are provided in respective image display regions of the liquid crystal display panel (10), each of the optical sensors (16) having a light receiving section (16d) for detecting transmitted light through a panel surface of the liquid crystal display panel (10). The liquid crystal display panel (10) is a transflective type panel and the optical sensors (16) are provided in respective reflective display regions (R) of the transflective type panel. Further, a reflective electrodes (34) provided above the respective optical sensors (16) serve as light shielding layers so as to shut out light which enters the light receiving section (16d) in an oblique direction. Moreover, an aperture (34a) is provided in a part of each of the reflective electrodes (34) so that the light receiving section (16d) can detect light from directly above.

    • The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device capable of preventing the occurrence of dark currents in photodiodes. Thus, the liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display panel 1 including an active matrix substrate and a backlight 13 for illuminating the liquid crystal display panel. The active matrix substrate 1 includes a photodiode 7 formed by a silicon film and a light shielding film 8 for shielding the photodiode 7 against illumination light from the backlight 13. The photodiode 7 and the light shielding film 8 are provided on a base substrate 5. The light shielding film 8 is formed by a semiconductor or an insulator. Preferably, the photodiode 7 is made of, for example, polycrystalline silicon or continuous grain silicon so as to have a characteristic that its sensitivity increases as the wavelength of light entering the photodiode becomes shorter. The light-shielding film 8 is formed by a silicon film, for example amorphous silicon, that reduces the transmittance of light entering the light shielding film as the wavelength of the light becomes shorter.

    • The present invention provides a display apparatus with image capturing function including optical sensors in its pixels, particularly a display apparatus capable of capturing an image while suppressing the power consumption. The display apparatus includes: optical sensors and sensor wirings provided in a pixel region of an active matrix substrate; a sensor row driver for selecting the optical sensors row by row; a sensor pixel readout circuit for reading out signal charges from the optical sensors in the selected row; a sensor column amplifier including the number of amplifiers corresponding to the rows of the optical sensors for generating a sensor output voltage; a sensor column scanning circuit for selecting the signal charges readout by the sensor pixel readout circuit column by column so that the selected signal charges being outputted to the sensor column amplifier; and a buffer amplifier (6) provided subsequent to the sensor column amplifier (24). The sensor column amplifier (42) or the buffer amplifier (6) is provided with a standby switching circuit for suppressing an output to a subsequent stage of either of the amplifiers in accordance with a standby signal.
