    • The present invention provides a transflective display device capable of extending a color reproduction range and reducing a difference in white balance between transmissive display and reflective display. The display device of the present invention is a transflective display device including four or more filters having different colors in a pixel, each of the four or more filters having different colors including: a transmissive region for displaying an image by transmitting light from a backlight; and a reflective region for displaying an image by reflecting surrounding light, wherein at least two of the four or more filters having different colors are different in a proportion of an area of the reflective region, and the proportion of the area is represented by the following formula (1): Proportion of area of reflective region=Area of reflective region/Effective area of filter  (1).

    • A display device includes a pixel defined by a plurality of sub-pixels. The plurality of sub-pixels include first, second, third and fourth sub-pixels. A second hue of the second sub-pixel is closest to a first hue of the first sub-pixel in the chromaticity diagram of the L*a*b* color system, and a third hue of the third sub-pixel is closest to the first hue on the opposite side to the second hue with respect to the first hue in the chromaticity diagram of the L*a*b* color system among the hues. The luminances of the plurality of sub-pixels are set such that while a color displayed by the pixel changes from black via the first color of the first sub-pixel to white, the luminance of the first sub-pixel starts to be increased, and when the luminance of the first sub-pixel reaches a predetermined luminance, the luminance of at least one of the second sub-pixel and the third sub-pixel starts to be increased.

    • A twisted nematic liquid crystal display device conducts a display operation in Normally Black mode. The liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal cell and two polarizers. The liquid crystal cell includes two substrates and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between them. The two polarizers face each other with the liquid crystal cell interposed between them. The liquid crystal display device further includes: a first optical compensator provided between one of the two polarizers and the liquid crystal cell so as to compensate for the wavelength dependence of the angle of rotation of polarized light passing through the liquid crystal layer in a black display state; and a second optical compensator provided between the first optical compensator and that polarizer so as to compensate for the wavelength dependence of the ellipticity of the polarized light passing through the liquid crystal layer in the black display state.
