    • Clear effluent from an aerobic sewage treatment tank is directed into one end of an elongated conduit adapted to be buried in the ground with the tank. The conduit has a length of many hundred feet and is preferably wrapped in the form of a substantially horizontal spiral coil. The opposite end of the conduit is vented to atmosphere, and a flow of air is directed from a supply pump through the conduit over the surface of the effluent to effect evaporation of the effluent into the air stream and discharge of the vapor with the air into the atmosphere. The air is directed into the conduit in a plurality of separate streams located at longitudinally spaced intervals and after moisture is removed from the air within a pressure-condensing container. The conduit is preferably formed of a corrugated flexible tubing of plastics material and may be constructed in a plurality of stacked coil sections which are connected in series.

    • THERE IS DISCLOSED AN IMPROVED SYSTEM FOR OBTAINING POTABLE WATER FROM HUMAN WASTE AND INVOLVING TWO EVAPORATORS HAVING A WASTE INLET IN COMMON AND A VAPOR OUTLET IN COMMON BUT SEGREGATED FUNCTIONALLY BY SUITABLY POSITIONED CONTROL VALVES. EACH EVAPORATOR IS OF CYLINDRICAL SHAPE, FORMED OF SEVERAL COMPARTMENTS OF DIFFERENT DIAMETERS, TWO OF WHICH ARE SECURED TOGETHER BY A CONICAL HOUSING. THE LOWERMOST COMPARTMENT IS HEMISPHERICAL IN SHAPE AND IS DETACHABLY SECURED TO THE ADJACENT COMPARTMENT. THERE ARE FOUR ISOTOPES IN THE LOWERMOST COMPARTMENT, ALSO A SINGLE ISOTOPE IN THE UPPERMOST COMPARTMENT. THE WASTE MATERIAL IS PUMPED INTO THE LOWERMOST COMPARTMENT WHERE IT IS HEATED AND THE VAPOR IS FORCED TO PASS THROUGH, IN SUCCESSION, A HEAVY LAYER OF "WICKING" MATERIAL, ALSO A PAIR OF HORIZONTALLY DISPOSED FILTERS, IN ADDITION TO A CIRCUMFERENTIAL FILTER. UPON REACHING THE UPPERMOST COMPARTMENT, THE VAPOR IS HEATED BY THE SINGLE ISOTOPE ENCLOSED IN A CASING FROM WHICH A NUMBER OF VANES RADIATE TO DISTRIBUTE THE HEAT. THE SPACE BETWEEN THE VANES IS FILLED WITH AN OXIDIZING CATALYST. THE VAPOR IS FED INTO A COILED PIPE LOCATED IN THE LOWERMOST COMPARTMENT WHERE IT GIVES UP ITS HEAT TO THE SURROUNDING WAST MATERIAL. THE VAPOR IS THEN CONDUCTED THROUGH A WATER COOLED CONDENSER, AND FINALLY TO A STORAGE TANK FOR CONSUMPTION. THE HEMISPHERICAL COMPARTMENT RECEIVES THE SEMI-SOLID PECIPITATE AND IS ADAPTED TO BE CLEANED BY THE ASTRONAUT BY REMOVING THE SAME AT THE DETACHABLE CONNECTION, AFTER A "SWITCH OVER" TO THE OTHER EVAPORATOR HAS BEEN EFFECTED BY THE VARIOUS VALVES.

    • A method for processing sewage eliminates chemical "treatment", or, the addition of chemicals that are as harmful or more so to the environment than raw sewage. The method of processing sewage disintegrates the generally solid components of sewage into a highly de-moisturized powder via alternative processes, the first being a freeze-drying process, wherein sewage (S) enters a settling tank (12) via inlet piping (14). The sewage then passes through a grinding pump (16), into a second holding tank (22), then into a freezer chamber (28), then into a vacuum chamber (42), and then into a storage station (50). A second process combining centrifugal separation and an evacuated "bake-out" step is also disclosed. Both porcesses drive out vaporizalble components from the sewage which would adversely impact the environment.

    • A liquid evaporator includes an air-tight outer container containing liquid therein, the liquid container having support legs adjacent the bottom surface thereof; an inner container mounted on the legs for partitioning the interior space of the outer container, the inner container having a wall made of insulating material; and a heater fixed to an upper portion of the outer container and positioned inside the inner container. The liquid evaporator may be combined with a deodorizing device for forming a urine treating device, wherein the urine treating device includes a deodorizing housing having an upper portion provided with a secondary heater therein, a catalyst surrounding the secondary heater, a blower provided outside the housing, and a diffusion pipe provided at the upper portion of the housing.

    • Water containing combustible sludges are dried with the multiple effect use of the heat required by adding recycled cool high boiling oil and heating the mixture by direct contact with steam produced as later described. Then the oil sludge mixture has water separated off which is possible, since water has been added by the direct condensation of steam in the heating of the mixture plus any extra original water in the sludge that can be removed by a centrifuge. The mixture is heated again by adding hot oil and then the mixture has water evaporated off by reducing the pressure. This steam produced is used for the direct steam heating mentioned above. Then water vapor is evaporated off again by reducing the pressure again and this water vapor is condensed by a water cooled condenser. In this way water vapor is evaporated off with the double use of heat. By indirect heat exchange of separated warm water with oil plus dried solids being heated sensible heat losses are kept small.
