    • PURPOSE:To easily form a high-hardness surface layer practically free from peeling and having sufficient hardening depth by subjecting the surface layer alone of a beta-type titanium alloy after ageing treatment to rapid heating up to a specific temp., to holding, and to rapid cooling and then applying ageing treatment again to the above alloy at a specific temp. CONSTITUTION:The surface layer alone of a beta-type titanium alloy previously aged at >=400 deg.C is subjected to rapid cooling so that a temp. of (the beta-transus of this alloy)+250 deg.C or above is reached, to holding, and then to cooling at >=10 deg.C/sec cooling rate. It is preferable that the above-mentioned rapid heating and rapid cooling of the surface layer are carried out by subjecting the surface to rapid heating by means of laser irradiation and then to rapid cooling by means of self-cooling. Subsequently, ageing treatment is applied again to the above alloy at 100-400 deg.C. By this method, beta-type titanium alloy which has a high-hardness surface layer practically free from peeling and having >=0.3mm hardening depth can be obtained.
