A skip-loading road vehicle (10) is able to transport a second skip (22) above a first skip (20), legally, by having a support (34) to support the upper skip (22) over the lower skip (20). The support (34) is a retractable platform (34) able to be swung out of the way of the upper skip (22) when it is being loaded, preferably being retracted in the loading direction (11), e.g. about a horizontal axis (362). The platform (34) may have a mounting (32) to retrofit it to an existing skip-loading vehicle (10) or may be fabricated with a skip-loader (16, 18, 20) for fitting to a chassis (12) and cab (14). Means (52, 500) may weigh skips (20, 22) and hence calculate the height of the centre of gravity of the combination of these with vehicle (10) in order to assess safety and hence control mode of driving, e.g. in steps. Means (58, 582, 500) may measure/compare the vehicle's height with the maximum safe vehicle height under a low bridge etc (580) being approached in order to assess safety and hence control mode of driving, in steps. A compound skip-carrying road vehicle (101) comprises a skip-loading vehicle (10) and a skip-carrying trailer (101) therefor, each comprising a skip-supporting means (34, 341) whereby each can transport a lower skip (22) and supported above it an upper skip (24). Turntable and/or other rotary and/or turning means are contemplated.
