The invention relates to a method for operating a vehicle brake system, comprising a brake force amplifier and an electronic slip control device, which is used as a fall-back level in the event of a malfunction of the brake force amplifier. According to the invention, if a malfunction of the brake force amplifier is detected, the position of an accelerator pedal is determined and, provided the accelerator pedal is released, a predefined initial pressure is built up in a pressure chamber of a master brake cylinder of the vehicle brake system with the aid of the slip control device, thereby causing a deceleration of the vehicle. The invention further relates to a control unit which is configured to execute the method, and a vehicle having a vehicle brake system and a control unit according to the invention.
