The invention relates to a process for the preparation of perhydroacenaphthene (chemical name: (2aR,5aα,8aR,8bα)-dodecahydro-acenaphthylene) of formula I, by catalytic hydrogenation of acenaphthene of formula II, in which the reaction is carried out in perhydroacenaphthene solvent, at 4-10 bar of hydrogen pressure, at 100-170°C and the starting material is free from catalyst inhibitor.
