Testing methods that detect virus in donor samples have increased the safety of the blood supply and improved the ability of physicians to monitor virus replication in infected patients. These methods, however, are unable to detect virus in donor samples if the donor is tested immediately following infection or if the donor has low levels of virus present in the sample. Testing for the presence of virus in whole blood or red blood cells will increase the sensitivity of viral testing methods and expand the periods of time following infection at which virus can be detected.
