An oxygen carrier system having an artificial oxygen carrier comprising hemoglobin vesicles having hemoglobin and an intermediate electron medium showing a standard electron potential of 0.05 to 0.56 V (based on standard hydrogen electrode) enclosed in a vesicle, and a reducing agent which is to be added to the aqueous phase outside the hemoglobin vesicles to reduce methemoglobin when hemoglobin enclosed in the hemoglobin vesicles is oxidized into methemoglobin. The reducing agent comprises as the active ingredient at least one compound selected from the group consisting of thiol compounds and reducing sugars.
