A vehicle display mirror assembly includes an electrochromic cell, the switchable reflective element, display module, an ambient light sensor, and a control member. The control unit automatically selects a display mode or in the mirror mode, in response to the detected ambient light level. In the display mode, the control unit activates the display module, and sets the switchable reflective element at a low reflection mode and sets the electrochromic cell to the clear state in the lowest attenuation. In the mirror mode, the control unit disables the display, and the switchable reflective element is set to the reflection mode, and thereby vary the attenuation due to the electrochromic cell.
