The present invention relates to a home appliance and a method of operating the same. According to an embodiment of the present invention, a method of operating a home appliance includes the steps of: receiving a remote control signal from a mobile terminal; receiving a user input signal from a local key; assigning priority to the user input signal generated according to a local key input when a difference between the times when the local key input is performed and the user input signal is received is shorter than a predetermined time; and performing an operation corresponding to the user input signal. Thus, when a plurality of control authority requests occurs, control authority can be assigned to one request.
