The drug dosage form of a solid tablet form containing at least 50% by weight of a local anesthetic is provided according to the present invention. Local anesthetics may be selected from amino amides, amino esters, and combinations thereof. Tablets containing the drug substance is less than 70% by weight and the other may be a vehicle in the form of mini-tablets. For example, the anesthetic may be in the lidocaine base or salt form, which is combined with excipients in a binder and a lubricant. Also it provides an implantable drug delivery device comprising the drug and, for example, the above-described drug tablet one or more may be contained within a biocompatible housing. Drug tablets may be in the fact that the flat end surface cylindrical shape, the device, there may be 10 to 100 drug tablets arranged in the housing in such a way that to the flat end surface of each of the drug adjacent to each other.
