PURPOSE: A foreign material detecting device, a foreign material detecting method, a liquid-drop discharging device, and a liquid-drop discharging method are provided to enhance the detection accuracy. CONSTITUTION: A foreign material detecting device(1) comprises a signal generating unit(2), a transmitting unit, a receiving unit, a storing unit(4), and a detecting unit. The signal generating unit generates electrical signals. The transmitting unit converts the electrical signals of the generating unit, thereby generating pressure waves in liquid. The receiving unit receives reflection waves from the liquid, thereby converting into the electrical signals. The storing unit stores information with respect to a state in which foreign materials are contained in the liquid. The detecting unit detects one or more between the existence and sizes of the foreign materials based on the electrical signals based on the stored information and electrical signals in which the reflection waves are converted.
