A method and an apparatus for operating an internal combustion engine having several cylinders are provided to stop exchanging the gas of at least one cylinder when a misfire is occurred. An apparatus for operating an internal combustion engine having several cylinders includes a gasoline engine(1), a first cylinder bank(2), and a second cylinder bank(3). The engine includes the first and the second cylinder banks. The first cylinder bank includes a first cylinder(5), a second cylinder(6), a third cylinder(7), and a fourth cylinder(8). The second cylinder bank includes a fifth cylinder(9), a sixth cylinder(10), a seventh cylinder(11), and an eighth cylinder(12). A first air channel includes a first throttle valve and supplies fresh air to the first cylinder bank. A second air channel includes a second throttle valve and supplies first air to the second cylinder bank.
