PURPOSE: Provided is a method for manufacturing transparent silica glass with good transparency and near theoretical density by vacuum sintering silica compacts derived from the silica sol, containing silica granules based on Si-alkoxide and fumed silica and F- ions-contained salt. CONSTITUTION: The method for manufacturing transparent silica glass comprises the steps of: (i) preparing a silica sol by mixing slurry type silica-dispersed solution with 0.01-2wt.%(based on the silica solution) of F- ions-contained salt(NH4F) as a gelation promoter, and milling, wherein the silica slurry is obtained by mixing fumed silica-dispersed solution with hydrolyzed Si- alkoxide(Si(OC2H5)4 or Si(OCH3)4) solution to be a weight ratio of solid content of fumed silica to hydrolyzed Si-alkoxide solution being 99:1 - 1:99, drying the mixed solution at 110deg.C for more than 48hrs, milling to be 0.5mm of silica granules, calcining at 900-1100 deg.C for 1-10hrs, and dispersing silica powder into water; (ii) pouring the silica sol into a mold and gelling; (iii) demolding to get a bulky gel; (iv) drying at 40deg.C for 48hrs; (v) thermal treating at 5-50deg.C/hr to 300-600deg.C for removal of organics; (vi) thermal treating at 100deg.C/hr to 500-1000deg.C in Cl2 atmosphere for removal of hydroxide ions and metallic impurities; (vii) sintering at 1200-1700deg.C for 0.1-100hrs under vacuum between 10-1 and 10-6torr. The step for removing foams in silica sol is optionally added to the next of step (i).
