PURPOSE:To make the distribution of thickness in the width direction of a strip effectively adjustable and to control properly a passing position in the width direction to a rolling mill, by passing a continuously running strip to be rolled through a tension generating device consisting of an upper roll and two lower rolls located at the inlet side of the mill. CONSTITUTION:In feeding a strip S such as a steel strip, the distribution of its tension in its width direction is adjusted by passing it through a tension generating device located at the inlet side of a rolling mill to control the passing position of strip S in its width direction. The tension control device is constituted of an upper roll 3 and two lower rolls 1, 2, and the rolls 1, 2 are fixed to a lower frame 4 and the roll 3 is fixed to an upper frame 5 through bearings. The distance between the roll 3 and the rolls 1, 2 is changed by the vertical movement of another upper frame 6 to which the roll 3 is fixed through a pin 8, and the movement is produced by a pinion 11 and a rack 10 which are driven by actuating a cylinder 9; the uniform distribution of tension in the width direction is given to the running strip S to pass it at the right position with respect to the rolling mill.
