PURPOSE:To obtain a heat resistant optical fiber having small initial transmission loss, superior tensile strength, water and hydrogen resistances, initial strength and fatigue characteristics by applying and baking a heat resistant material based on polytitanocarbosilane under specified conditions when an optical fiber is drawn. CONSTITUTION:When an optical fiber is drawn, a heat resistant material based on polytitanocarbosilane is applied and baked to obtain a heat resistant optical fiber. The concn. of oxygen in the atmospheres in baking and drying furnaces is regulated to =300 deg.C and the rate of drawing is regulated to >=20m/min. The resulting coating film has
