PURPOSE:To accomplish focusing at an arbitrary position in an effective scanning area by irradiating a photosensitive body provided with a higher harmonic wave generating layer with a light flux and performing recording and focusing operations by means of the light flux which is sent from a single light source and used for irradiating the effective scanning area of the photosensitive body. CONSTITUTION:The photosensitive body 3 irradiated with the light flux from the light source 1 through an optical system is provided with the higher harmonic wave generating layer and a photosensitive layer. Image recording is performed on the photosensitive layer by either a higher harmonic wave or a fundamental wave which are generated in the higher harmonic wave generating layer and automatic focusing operation for the light flux on the photosensitive body 3 is performed by the other wave. Therefore, image recording and automatic focusing are simultaneously performed by the light flux from the single light source 1. Hereby, focusing is performed at an arbitrary position in the effective scanning area of the photosensitive body 3.
